That dash mat isnt OEM but it serves an excellent purpose for one you wouldn't think especially in a 3rd gen.

Cat's love it?
Forgot to say the other day... I'd left the boot of my new 3rd open the other day when I was working on it to dry out some of the moisture that was in it. The wind kept blowing it closed though. Then later on whilst walking back down the drive with my Mum I could see through the rear window and I noticed Harriet (one of my Cats) was on the dash behind the steering wheel looking all flustered. I couldn't for the life of me think how she got in there though! I know I hadn't trapped her in there. I soon realised the boot had been open and was now closed, but even then, she couldn't have gotten through the back seats if she had been trapped in the boot
Then I saw it... She obviously had been trapped in the boot, and her only way out was through the same hole one of the rear speakers was sat in! lol. She'd pushed the speaker out the hole as fortunately it was only placed in there
God knows how long she would have been in there otherwise

Reduce noise and reflections. Audio gurus use them to tame windscreen Hugh frequency reflections.
A 3rd gen has narrow pillars and massive windows/upper canopy area for amazing visability but causes a lot of interior echoes and reflections.
Plus yes, cats love it despite their ugly dash appearence.
