Re: JEBB4's White BB2 (yang). H22A engine rebuild in progres
Well it has been a challenging two days to say the least...
The engine is in and running but I ran in to a few issues along the way, misinformation from a swap thread I was using off of a US forum caused some issue that along with abit of bad luck and having to rush the job due to using the hoist at my work made it quite stressful...
So firstly, removing the old engine was not too bad, even though usually when using a hoist I would lift the car off the engine taking the front cross member off to do so, but this time I thought I'd pull it out the top and take the bonnet off as I did with the doner car

Ok so not to bad getting it out happy enough, then I stripped the inlet off my h23 and offered it up to the h22 expecting it to go straight on as the swap guide said and it was a completely different stud pattern

As you can see the inlets look identicle from above but the studs are in total different order

Right ok so I got the Mrs to bring the h22 inlet down, no time to clean it just swapped the injectors and idle control valve, which is also slightly different but got the inlet on and moved onto the belts..
The alternator went straight on as expected but none of the belts were right, now I think this is to do with the lightened crank pulley being smaller but I managed to get a 4 rib belt to fit on the alt along with the AC compressor which I will remove when I get anon AC belt but no power steering at present as there was nothing that would work with it so I need to measure it and get one ordered..
Moving on, then it was time to swap the gearbox and fit my lightened fly and exedy clutch was excited for this and all the parts looked right before fitment

So I bolted the fly on, then the clutch all lined up with the supplied alignment tool, then with the engine still supported by the crane but swaying around quite abit I man handled the box up to the engine and.... Oh dear it won't go on
, tried winding it on with bell housing bolts with a ratchet but started to get too tight for my liking..
Now with all the other stuff being different this led me thinking that a component was wrong so the next two hours was spent removing and comparing the other flywheel and clutch, mounting the box with just the flywheels no clutch found the box to go straight on with both flys, so I questioned the clutch, it looked identical in size and appearance so after lifting the box on and off about 20 times I ended up just bolting the cutch on and winding the box on with the bell housing bolts using the air gun which I hate doing but it went tight as drokk then just popped on
By this time it was almost 6 at night and I had to be out the worship by 7 as that's when the alarm becomes active, so a mad scramble to try bolt the engine in the bay led to yet more swearing and wondering why the hell I was even bothering with this whole excercise
, it was just so difficult with the angle the engine had to be on and not having the correct equipment to be able to control that angle, when you drop the car onto the engine using the hoist everything is level and very little adjustment is needed..
Anyway got it bolted in and that's where it stayed for the night.
That was day one and I've run out of time so I will post day two when I have time, but it involved more confusion and swearing

Haha yeah I know, unsure on why it's like that to be honest, people are usually here till 7 anyway I suppose..wurlycorner wrote:Argh, sorry that didn't go to plan.
Great work there in that time though, anyway.
auto alarm on?
That doesn't sound to clever!

I'm surprised there's a conversion thread that suggests the 2.3i inlet manifold is a direct fit on to an H22! That's not very clever
It'll go on to a 2.0i as an upgrade, but that's it I think.
Always the way when you're pushed for time mate, but sounds like you did well considering mate! Were you on your own, or did you have a helping hand?

That's the guide I used and wasn't much good to be honest, says that my car being 94 should be wired for VTEC but isn't..
Anyway I wrote a massive update for this but wouldn't upload, kept saying there was some unreadable content or something and refer to moderators

Anyway cars running and driving but I'll do a proper update when I've buttoned up some of the loose end and am happy with it..

That sounded painful,at least you had the use of a workshop and all it's accessories, that job at home well you'd be still under or over there
Someday i'll do an engine swap and someday i will remember other peoples pain as i fell mine but when you get to the end it makes it all worth it,good job!

Yeah I don't think I will be doing another swap without my own hoist or shed again and I certainly ain't doing one on a drivewayGreg-SiR wrote:That sounded painful,at least you had the use of a workshop and all it's accessories, that job at home well you'd be still under or over there![]()
Someday i'll do an engine swap and someday i will remember other peoples pain as i fell mine but when you get to the end it makes it all worth it,good job!

So day two was as painful as day one basically started out ok just plugging stuff in and doing levels etc...
Then when I came to start it she wouldn't fire, worked out I had a weak spark, tried different ECU, then spent an hour looking at wiring thinking it was wrong somehow so I'm starting to loose my jobby now and then I see I left one plug off that goes to some sort of box and relay on drivers side of the bulk head, plugged it in and it fired strait up!

Then I put coolant in it and it all came back out, the water pump weep hole seal had gone dry over the months of it standing.
Now this really got my back up as I checked the water pump visually and looked fine so didn't bother changing it!! Big mistake and quite embarrassing really

I tried to tap the hole and put a bolt in it but was no good..
So I left it for the day..
Monday I ordered a new pump and stayed behind after work to do it only to find the one they sent was wrong!

So I managed to scavenge the pump off the h23 just to get me out the jobby..
The car now held its fluids and ran but had some crazy intermittent idle hunting and drove badly, jerking and missing..
Tuesday I swapped the throttle body for the one off the h23 inlet with new gasket this solved my idle issue...
Wednesday I continued to rack my brain as to why it was driving so badly, checked all my vac lines etc, to no avail so that night I decided it was either the ECU faulty or distributor/coil..
Thursday I swapped the ECU for the p14 from the h23 and it fixed it!!

I think I ruined the ECU when trying to do the manual conversion on it, too much heat to the circuit board or
something I suspect

Friday I measured the size of belts needed for alt and PAS measured wrong and got wrong belts twice but third time I got one out of two which thankfully was the PAS..
Today I did the valve clearances and messed around with the cam belt covers as the bottom one was catching due to the seal which runs around it giving up the ghost so did some trimming and completely removed the middle piece.... (I'm not quite brave enough to not run any covers like the JTCC accords h22 reverse head)

Anyway here's some pics of how it stands..
