As mentioned on the previous page, my old gearbox has suffered some damage by the installers of the xact flywheel and act clutch, the mounting holes for the rear engine mount have suffered damage.

jobby, any ideas how they did that?? :? On the upside, at least you have a spare!! Better you found out this way I guess, the alternative would've been doing the rebuild on your current lump now and discovering it then with no spare in your possession :(

Old and new, old with gearbox, ATTS and wiring loom removed already, ready to start working on new unit

Image

original ATTS unit cleaned up ready for refit

Image

New engine with new water pump, balance shaft oil seal and retainer, new tensioner roller assembly and auto tensioner

Image

New timing belt, balance shaft belt, tensioners and tensioner rollers

Image

Now to another hold up. Buying an engine that has been in a front end collision was always a slight worry, but James had reassured me he had the engine checked upon removal. But issues have arisen.

Here are the bolts that secure the cam belt side engine mount. Note how bent the long one is !! :?

Image

Engine mount fixing holes/threads –
Far top right of pic is the broken part of block/thread where the long bent bolt was.
Center right bolt hole has been damaged, see small crack in alloy to left of thread at 9 o’clock position which has also “bowed” the flat surface. Also note damage to thread.

Image

so the new block has damage. fan"bloody"tastic. not too bad, but not ideal.

Just for comparison – this is the “new engine” mount removed and bolted up onto my “old engine” – see how far off the top bolt hole is. Yes this plate is adjustable via the two bolts but I wanted to show how far off it was, most likely due to impact damage of the accident. my“old engine” mount has been transferred to the “new engine” with no need for adjustment, The threads have been cleaned up as best as possible, not much could be done with the broken section but a few good threads at the bottom. All bolts have been Loctited for security.

Pretty shocking on the gearbox, you have to be right ham fisted dickhead (or a numpty that doesn't know any better than to put all bolts in with an impact gun  :tosser: ) to gentleman's sausage up that badly twice in close succession.
Surprised that much lost mount attachment didn't make a noticeable difference though!

Also very surprised on the block damage from the front end collision!

Great that you have the build pics though 8-)

:( ah buggeration. Sorry about that mate. As you said on the phone it would have been hard for them to see that when the engine was removed but I did have an inspection so you would have thought it might have been. The loom annoys me though. For it to be toast tells me they must have damaged it taking it out of the car. :x
There is ony one place for it to be though and its there already. It always costs a bit more than you think but you always get way more than you pay for with rich and the team. It will come back having been 'breathed on' and will feel wicked.
The gearbox damage is really suprising and disheartening as they will have known they did that and still seen it out the door. The one saving grace with all and any of it is you took the plunge and bought up the only full set of spares available in the country at the time :D No matter what happens you have more of the important parts than you can use at one time and that gives you options for years to come.

what has rich advised with the speed converter? I think its set up to go over 112mph at the moment but very little vtec in first? iirc. I pretty much just rip them out and go as nature intended and do the conversion in my head.

I meant to ask rich about the speed converter. Mine currently has0virtually no vtec in first but will go over 112 miles per hour. I wouldn't mind having it in first.

nitinski is correct. You cant very well tell the civic you'll catch him up easy enough once he beat you at the lights. :x

Its always fun flirting with the kph-mph in your head as well. 'Am i speeding?' It made me drive a little slower in normal conditions maybe and I took more motice of surrounding traffic.

Nobody has said this damage was done with an impact gun...in fact it would be pretty unlikely due to the tight(ish) confines.
Best guess (which I've seen before) is either the bolts were left loose and some high load starts (drag type launches) have overstressed the gearbox casing due to mount movement.
Or
Again, I've seen (and heard) of people removing all the gearbox bolts then levering the crap out of it to try and get the box removed without realising there are 3 more bolts through the mount holding it in....sounds unbelieveable but trust me, I've had the desperation phone calls!!

The wiring loom damage was not extensive or impossible to repair but from the damage to it I was more inclined to use a known good loom rather than taking a chance on one that may have further damage unseen. A couple of sensors damaged too...like the TPS but again we have simply swapped over the known good items from Sam's old motor.

It's all gravy now, car is all up and running, engine is sweet enough and all systems running like clockwork.
