It's not the main relay.

In my experience, provided you hit the main body of the starter motor (not the metal caps on the end) you cannot possibly damage them, no matter how hard you try!

It's worth checking the connections to the starter motors solenoid. It's just a spade connector and can come off quite easily.

Why am i whacking the motor again?

Do i need to remove steering column cover 1st?

It appears as though the starter motor is sticking (which is why it might need a whack), but also could just be a loose connection.

Nope, that's when it was assumed to be the main relay. Under the bonnet is most likely.

Solenoids and brushes stick. Whacking them frees them off. It's a test to see if that clears the fault when it occurs. If it does, then you can use that to live with it for a short while whilst you get a replacement starter motor.

The starter motor is under the bonnet, no need to be doing anything inside the car at all.

I poke it and stomp it and try to whack it about
20times with a wheel brace/ cross spanner ...

Yeah, that looks like the starter motor. That's the end cap you can see by the looks?

You only need to whack it when you get a moment when it won't start, to see if that sorts it.
Just whacking it generally won't tell you anything I'm afraid!
