Having had both a BB1 and a BB4 the only time I notice the difference is when parking. And I felt more confident taking roundabouts etc at higher speeds in the BB4 as it was always the same, but that's prob just in my head

Turning circle sucks on the BB4 though :(

Actually, ^this!
It does grind my gears when people say about 4WS always breaking, it really wasn't the case.
More often than not any issues are down to a duff sensor here or there and rarely the actual 4WS itself, providing its been looked after.
The trouble is the generally ignorant public didn't check them as often as they should, and when something (usually simple to fix) did arise, they decided to be unscrupulous bastards and remove fuses and sell on, thus tainting the image of yet another SUPERB bit of Honda kit, that was so far ahead of its time as usual that only now are people like Porsche putting on their supercars...

Nope, it's always active. The only time I've ever had trouble with mine it was a wheel sensor that had failed (which nuked the ABS too). Half hour's work later all was shiny again 8-)

I cant reverse my lude into my back yard in one maneuvere without 4WS. Without it - its about a 4 point turn...

Mine does have an intermittent fault - where it will switch off. I have perfected though how to stop it doing it. Others on here and PUK have described similar. It always seems to get upset, if the first thing I do is reverse from stationary, or turn left first. However, if I start the car and WAIT a bit longer before moving off than normal, and only turn RIGHT before turning LEFT, then it stays on. I never get a problem whilst driving, it only ever decides to go wrong when you first move.

I have the 4WS ecu from my donor JDM car which I have inspected for the solder cracks on the 2 relays, and they were there!! So I have repaired this myself and am waiting to replace the ecu in my car to see if it fixes my problem. The fact that mine behaves itself - if I wait before driving off it makes me think that it is partly a warming up problem (solder cracks?) and turning LEFT being a problem at the start (could it be that the 2 relays in the ecu control left/right sides?)

so if the 4ws fails does it turn the car to a normal car with like only front wheel drive , i see concept how it works but its a bit worrying if it fails like on a nissan skyline gtr with hi-cass ) my mate had a accident which nearly killed him in his first skyline as his hi-cass wasnt locked off
Looking for a Gen5 Lude very soon....

It doesn't lock off. If it fails, it switches off and the rear wheels are held straight by two chunky springs. The huge amber warning light on the dash is the warning to slow down and get it checked.

I drove mine around for a few years with faulty 4ws, never bothered me as I drive like miss daisy anyway.

No warning light either as the pervious muppet owner had removed the bulb from the cluster. :x

10mins with a soldering iron on the ECU and it was fully working again. :D

It took longer to put the bulb back in the dash than to fix the problem.

ah right so if it fails its not actually a dangerous thing then , but would be better to get checked

these little things are really making it easy for me to help with when i get mine ..this site seems very good so far :D
