It was mentioned in another thread that you could put a cylinder head in the dishwasher to clean it - cue today's science experiment

I had a cross flow head that I bought for £1.50 in the hopes of fitting it to my Golf. Anyway since buying it, it has sat around gathering dust. I figured it was the perfect candidate for the dishwasher on this basis. Here's some pics as I got it ready.

Not the dirtiest thing in the world but it's got old oil on the inside, grime on the outside, dog hairs and god knows what else on it.

Then I took the camshaft out - no idea what all that black jobby is!!! It's got the consistency of play doh or something similar. Maybe just old congealed oil?? It wasn't all the way around the cam shaft so it must have accumulated after the last time the head was used.

I wiped up most of the black stuff

It's as if the dishwasher designer knew I needed to keep these in order!

And in it all goes

And here it is afterwards :)

So yeah all in all the cylinder head seems fine and the dishwasher is not dead. Seems like a pretty good way of cleaning up parts with zero scrubbing involved. Only thing I will say is that some surface oxidation appeared on the nuts and also on the hydraulic followers where the precision finish was damaged. Otherwise it's all good - I'll definitely be putting more things through the dishwasher

I mentioned the idea earlier in the day, which was met with a 'don't you drokking dare'. I gave it 30 minutes and put it in anyway

Yeah, I'm going to grab one of those dish washer cleaner things and blast it through, just in case!

Holy squeaky oil-paths! That's clean

Has anyone tried the fish-cooking thing?

I've got the Golf booked in for MOT tomorrow, so I've been scrabbling around frantically trying to sort the last few bits that I could. Had some fun rewiring the indicators, and had to have a real hunt around the house to find the correct alloy to have matching wheels on the front axle  I just pray it passes emissions after standing for more than a year :? Wish me luck!
