Disconnecting the battery might remove the codes and therefore the warning light if it's just a spurious fault. But it's a big 'if'.
If the steering wheel isn't too far off centre (mine angles very slightly left, too), the reset procedure with the jumped connector and steering wheel movement is without doubt the way to go next. Be as accurate as you can with the wheel movement and prepare yourself for two or three goes at it. You've got nothing to lose!

get the wheels off and clean them up I was so surprised how nasty mine where when I had the wheels off
