Another Insurance thread!!
I hope I can help answer a few of the questions that have come up here;
Insurance is all based around risks, age, car, postcode, parked overnight, security, driving experience are just some of them.
With regards to staying out of the city and why it would be cheaper to insure in the city, couple of reasons for this. CCTV cameras are a big part of claims these days, even if there isn't one where the car is parked, chances are there will be one somewhere close by.
What you will find in some cases is that it is actually cheaper to insure your car in a "less affluent" area than the suburbs purely based on the fact that the suburbs have more valuable cars hence the theives are more likely to go there to steal cars. Simples.
When adding on a partner/spouse the price decreases because it is statistically proven that you are less likely to have an accident if you are in a relationship. No, honestly this is the case. Same with kids, if you have kids then you are a safer driver according to some insurance companies.
The best advice I can give anyone is, get on your own policy as soon as possible. There are some insurance comanies that will turn a blind eye to "fronting"(second driver to parents, but main driver) however you will end up paying the same in the long run.
Shop around, I know you have probably heard it a few times but it is true. Plus, just be thankful that you dont have to literally phone around as I did when I bought my first car!
Declare EVERYTHING. Times are hard and insurance companies are doing everything that they can NOT to pay out on claims.
The last thing as to why insurance prices have gone up is that due to the bad weather/floods/riots in London, insurance companies need to make that money back somehow. So they dillute it by putting the prices up for everyone to make their profits back.
Excuse the long post, but having worked for 3 different large insurance companies, I know what they get up to and some of the ins and outs.
