on puk the guide said 215/40/17, wasnt sure that was right but thats where I got it from

I own 4 different 5G brochucres, released at different dates. The stated tyres sizes for the 2.2VTi are:
06/1997 - 195/65/R14 (2.0) & 205/50/R16 (2.2VTi).
06/1998 - 195/65/R14 (2.0), 205/50/R16 (2.0 Motegi), 205/50/R16 (2.2VTi) & 215/45/R17 (2.2VTi Motegi).
02/1999 - 195/65/R14 (2.0), 205/50/R16 (2.0 Motegi), 205/50/R16 (2.2VTi) & 215/45/R17 (2.2VTi Motegi).
01/2000 - 205/50/R16 (2000 Sport), 205/50/R16 (2000 Sport Motegi), 215/45/R17 (2.2VTi) & 215/45/R17 (2.2VTi Motegi).
My 2.2VTi (which I've Motegi'd) is running 225/45/R17.

There's no rubbing issues at the front at all but there will be at the rear when the 4WS is doing its thing on full lock. The fix illustrated earlier sorts it. I used a Dremel type of tool to sort mine out.
In theory, it should be more comfy as there is more air in the tyre, but I've been running these size tyres for years and years so can't say for sure.
