I can recall Celicas being on my shortlist back in the 80's, they were less than a grand then. I was looking at them, Audi 80's and MG Montego Turbos, budget £1500, but ended up buying a 1980 Chavalier Sportshatch for £300.

How times change!

Mine was very similar to this -

In the end i stripped it of all trip, painted it in grey primer, started painting the bonnet back with rattle cans but gave up and drove it around like that. I started many trends with that car, years before they took on -

1. Smooth look
2. Black bonnet
3. Matt paint (ie primer)
4. Rat look (unintentionally)

We had the Opel Manta version. It was a great truck and did loads of miles before the rat look proved terminal. Wouldn't mind another.
