Steering wheel upgrade

Post by andypont » Sun Nov 04, 2012 10:28 pm

Hi.
I have just fitted a S2000 wheel to my 5th gen, and thought I should share.
Thanks to@RattyMcClelland for supplying me with the wheel, @prelude_h22 for his thread showing that lude cruise switches can be mounted on other wheels and also to http://www.nptog.org for the 'how to'. http://www.ntpog.org/mods/fifth-s2kwheel/index.shtml
The replacement wheel didnt have any cruise controls, so I removed the ones off my original wheel and mounted those (almost identically to how prelude_h22 did so).

I wasn't able to use the lude fixing bracket as it was too deep. As an alternative I drilled holes in the S2K plastic surround for fixing screws and plug connection.

The lower hole is offset by a few mm. Initially I staggered it the wrong direction - hence 3 mounting holes instead of 2.
As the plug cannot be accessed when the switches are mounted it was necessary to fit the wheel first, and then pull the cable though the hole to plug into the switch unit. I put an extra nut and washer on each fixing screw in the housing (making them captive) to make assembly easier. There is plenty of room to do this as the underside of the cruise switch unit is hollow.

Ready for the airbag to go back on.

Finished.

It is a very nice upgrade. I really like the feel of a smaller wheel, so this is something I would have done a while back had I realised it was so easy to maintain the airbag and cruise controls.

Apologies for the quality of the photos. My camera battery was dead so I used my phone camera instead.

I will have to measure them both, out of interest. I guess its not actually massively smaller, but certainly feels different to drive.

That looks really nice and doesn't look out of place like so many of the after-market wheels do.

Nice job! 8-)

The CC buttons look great too. + Rep! ;)

Glad my guide helped you out. Very neatly done with regards to the CC controls

I was torn between the S2k wheel and the ep3 wheel but there were more ep3 wheels avialable and were cheaper at the time so decieded to go for that.

S2k wheel looks awesome, Top Job 8-)
