Stage one Clutch and Lightweight Flywheel - Alittle help
Post by prelude_h22 » Thu Nov 01, 2012 6:17 pm
HI All
I am having a dillemma and was wondering if i could pick everyones brains to see what people have bought in the past and any reccomendations. I want the cars clutch to have as OEM pedal feel as possible and the same with the driveability - i.e. stuck in traffic jams, parking etc
I am looking to upgrade my clutch and flywheel and have below several choices
typical prices are next to them. light weight flywheel would be the 5 ish kg weight version
ACT stage one clutch £348
Compeition Clutch (Stage one) £165
ACT Street Lite Flywheel £246
Compeition Clutch lightweight flywheel £155
M-Factory lightwieght flywheel £219
Would a lighter than 5kg flywheel be beneficial
I am more inclined to go for the cheaper alternatives but i have heard horror stories about flywheels disintegrating and upgraded clutches chattering and making noises after several hundred miles. I would prefer to pay more for the more reliable option as any one would.
Any help or feedback would be appreciated
thanks all

I have an Exedy Stage 1 & a Fidanza 8lb Flywheel.
I fitted it at the same time as changing my engine so hard to tell, but I think the clutch is a tiny bit stiffer and you have to raise the revs a little more than before, but it is only a slight difference.
I think it's only when you go for a paddle type clutch that you notice a big difference in driveability.

cheers peeps
any one have a competition clutch flywheel and stage one clutch combination?
Will be tempted to get the 4.4kg ultra lightweight CC flywheel instead of the lightweight 6.35kg
What is the weight of the stock flywheel?

I can recommend the F1 Racing 5.2Kg flywheel. Without additional balancing its held up fine to 8.5K RPM for a couple of years now. I use it with an ATR OEM clutch and that holds 250+ BHP, so there's no need to go for a competition clutch unless you've got more power than that.
You do have to be a a little more careful with very slow starts (normal driving), either by raising the revs a little more or engaging the clutch very gently.
I've driven on a multiple plate ceramic paddle racing clutch (cost over £1K) in an evo. It felt like the only way to drive the car was to rag the tits off it at every traffic light, or risk engaging slowly and almost stalling/making the car jerk. Fun for a while, but not really practical.

cheers merlin. crikey the stock one is rather heavy.
cheers judderod. So would you say it would be fine using the ultra lightweight flywheel with any standard OEM clutch
would a stage 1 clutch be overkill for a standard h22a8 engine? (i dont plan to increase its horsepower)
