Clutch, DIY job?

Clutch, DIY job?
Post by Bio » Wed Oct 24, 2012 12:36 pm
Hi guys, I'm pretty sure I'm on the original clutch as I cant find any evidence of a replacement in the service history or receipts and I'm finding it's getting progressively more awkward to control and it feels like it's slipping a bit.
So I naturally have a question or three;
Can it be done on a drive way using just the service manual? (I'm at work so don't have my copy right now)
Is it a 2 person job?
If I get it done, should I get a new flywheel at the same time? I'm thinking Fidanza lightweight
OEM, Exedy, ATR or other?
Should I go for 5th or 4th gen plate? (if a 4th fits, I only get this impression from the table of clutches that it might be better)
If I go for a lightened fly wheel, can I expect much in the way of BHP gains (dyno results would be great, google is a bit vague), or just a "free-er" engine?
Is this more of an "if you have to ask, you shouldn't do it" kinda job?
I appreciate its a lot of questions but I'd quite like to do it myself and save some £££ if I can. Honda quoted >£600 after VAT to do it!

Can it be done on a drive way using just the service manual? Yes.
Is it a 2 person job? No, but easier with 2.
If I get it done, should I get a new flywheel at the same time? I'm thinking Fidanza light weight
OEM, Exedy, ATR or other? It's not a requirement, but since you have it all apart, why not put a lighter one in there.
Should I go for 5th or 4th gen plate? (if a 4th fits, I only get this impression from the table of clutches that it might be better) They should be the same fitment.
If I go for a lightened fly wheel, can I expect much in the way of BHP gains (dyno results would be great, google is a bit vague), or just a "free-er" engine? You wont get anymore BHP, but a faster revving engine.

Get a 4th gen clutch plate if you can, they have a slightly bigger area. From the LG Wiki http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/honda-p ... t2094.html

Merlin - dont u have an exedy clutch for sale?
If not then one of the main Honda dealers (not sure of which one it is) had 4th gen OEM and ATR clutch kits on sale for about £130.
I will try and find the link

Was this the place your on about Vanzep? http://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/genuine- ... p-391.html Inc VAT £162
Edit - Even though they list that as a 92-96 its actually a 5th gen part. The part number has P5M (5th gen) in it and not P13 (4th gen).

changing the flywheel wont affect your timing at all mateyBio wrote:Cheers Merlin, that's the wiki I was looking at when I figured I'd ask if a 4G plate is a better option
Is there any chance that if I'm playing with the flywheel I can balls the timing?
