the back of the door handle the mechanism is attached to the lock by a rod the rod may have been knocked off the mechanism/door handle

Ahh, Get you. We did have the door card off. However it all seemed to be atatched. We think the rod linked to the door handle on the outside has been stretched in some way so there is too much play. Think that can be possible?

It's not worth trying to bend them back, once they've been bent out of shape they lose their shape. Just get a replacement one off another car and then swap them.

Steering wheel and hub fitted, although was doing it in the dark and messed up the cruise control unit, so now looking for one to modify / adapt in some way instead of putting it onto my deep dish black suede steering wheel.
