Common MOT failure points
Post by Animal Mother » Fri Oct 12, 2012 9:25 am
My car (5g 2.2 vti) should be dropped off fo its MOT today, it'd be nice to know what it will fail on.
So, what are the common MOT failure points on these cars?
I already know it'll fail on a rear caliper, and this is quite common. Anything else?

Ball joints and the like?BigTom wrote:I've been looking at a lot of MOT histories recently in my search for a lude, and yeah, brakes as a whole seem to be the most common issue. And sometimes the suspension.

Things that wear out over their operational life and need replacing really - mine needs a front ball joint and a tyre replaced, otherwise it would've gone through no problemo
my brakes are borderline too, but it's presumably because of all the braking you have to do after VTEC
Otherwise as above really, they're quite solid cars
Also rust on 4th gens

^ actually, rust on any gen these days. Usually not an MOT fail though unless it gets really bad

iirc it's any rust that they can put their rust testing tool thing through within 30cm of suspension mounts, or something similar?? Have we got a resident MOT tester who knows
I should probably add that I doubt this would be a problem in any but the most neglected 5th gen

How many miles is on yours and what year is it?A1ex wrote:All 3 of my ludes have needed front drop links on the mot. Last MOT had an upper N/S wishbone and tie rod ends.

This is more prevalent on lowered cars though. I'm on the original front droplinks for my 1994 lude.A1ex wrote:All 3 of my ludes have needed front drop links on the mot. Last MOT had an upper N/S wishbone and tie rod ends.
