SGM Racepaint - In the booth for re-spray 2

Just a teeny weeny little update tonight for you all and only one picture

Image

Car is now completely prepped and primered inside, outside, engine bay and underside.

They decided it was easier just to paint the lot again rather than try masking areas off
The roof is being done a different colour anyway, and the n/s/r quarter needed painting because of the petrol flap conversion that really only left the o/s/r quarter and a few other smaller sections.
SGM Racepaint wanted to do a top job on it as did Custom Fabrications so they both decided to go ahead and do it all anyway and surprise me 8)

Happy days :D

Should be back at C.F workshop on Tuesday so am going up to get the suspension back in place before we fabricate the front crossmember and adjustable strut rods.
Steering rack subframe and rear subframe have been lightened and strengthened so will get some pics of those before they go back on if possible.

To be continued

Join the queue...I've got mine on ebay so don't steal my thunder.
Already sold my kidneys, liver and splean to medical science....not that their any good mind you...I think they just wanted them to use as an example of how not to treat your body's delicate internal organs

Yeah I agree with you Dave, when that pic arrived on my phone yesterday it marked a turning point in the project. It's all about building it back up from this point onwards.

Now who's gonna help me out by buying some of the stuff I've got for sale? :D

SGM Racepaint - Re-spray and back at Custom Fab

Here we go then boys and girls.... the latest updates.

First and foremost I want to publicly acknowledge the awesome work carried out in the cage build and body shell work on this project by

Andy and Simon @ Custom Fabrications - cage, boot floor work, seam welding, etc etc - you've all seen the pics, it's no wonder that Prodrive didn't want to let them go!! 8)

and

SGM Racepaint in Banbury - awesome work, going above and beyond to get the results you are about to see. Trust me..that shell took some prep work and the finish in the flesh is just amazing which is no more than you should expect from a company who look after cars that have won five WRC titles, two Le Mans titles, two BTCC titles and numerous championship and event wins around the world  8)

These pics were from Andy who (along with Simon) has been keeping an eye on things while the car was at SGM

Right, so you've seen the shell in the spray booth all in primer.....well here it is all in primer except for the roof which has now been painted in super smooth deep black 8)

Image

Image

Then on monday and tuesday they finished off the rest of the paintwork.
Here's SGM finishing off the buffing work to the new paintwork.
Aston Martin deep metalic silver, Performance Autoworks Orange, and Custom Fabrications Black.....quite a combination 8)

Image

Image

And now onto the main course. What follows is a selection of the pics I took last night showing some of the highlights and my favourite bits.

I'll not post up all the pictures I took last night (circa 50 of them) but they are all there on my gallery of the build -
05 - Custom Fabrication and SGM Race Paint

I'll also not go into too much detail describing what the picture shows...for the most part the cage and fabrication works have already been detailed during the write up as I've been going along.
There are some bits to talk about all the same 8)

Arrived at CF workshops, this is the sight that I was greeted with.
To say I was gobsmacked is an understatement. I knew the colours and I had a good idea of how it was going to look but even so I was still speachless for a little while

Image

Image

The engine bay has been smoothed, all factory trim and bolt holes covered with adhesive pads, sealed and painted over - this gives it all a nice smooth finish. It's now up to me to uncover the only holes needed during the build.

Image

Check out the quality of the finish to the paint job on the cage and interior. I didn't think it would be possible for it to look this good but the combination of the fabrication quality and the paint finish is simply stunning.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Yep, they even did the hard to reach places with just as much care and attention to get the same level of finish.

Image

This pic shows where the C-pillar weight reduction cut-outs have been aluminum taped before the paintwork was done. This just gives a nicer smoother look to the finish. Might be a little hard to spot so have added a "before" shot of the other side as well

Image

Image

My photography skills don't do the paintwork the justice it deserves I'm afraid but here's a couple of examples of the orange and the black roof.
I think it's still fairly obvious to see why I'm so bloody pleased with it

You can see the fuel flap is now a distant memory and is now replaced by the custom recessed panel for the aero filler cap 8)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

So did it stop there? Body, interior and engine bay all back looking nice and presentable now.
Hmmm what about the wheel arches then....surely a few layers of black stone chip would do the job eh? Well yes but it wouldn't look as nice as this and the stonechip is a bit heavy
Here's some wheel arch pictures

Image

Image

Image

Front upper chassis legs have received the aluminum tape treatment like the C-pillars. This will stop it all filling up with crud thrown up from the road. Here's a before and after pic to show you what I mean

Image

Image

You've probably guess already but they didn't just stop at the wheel arches. What with all the boot floor and rear chassis x-member fabrication plus of course all the seam welding something had to be done to the underside of the car.... Stonechip? ... Nahhhhh 8)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

While I was up there at CF we decided it was as good a time as any to get the front subframe and suspension bolted back into the car so that it could come off the spits permanantly. The suspension will need to come back off the car once it's back at Performance Autoworks workshop as there are lots of plans for that and it all needs overhauling now anyway.
Anyway, at least now it's sat back on it's own front suspension

Image

Image

Image

And then finally (for now), we just couldn't resist the temptation to get the steering column and seat bolted back in place...and then mock up the rear wheel so we could take a sneaky preview of a more complete look.

Image

Image

Image

Can't tell you how chuffed I am with the way this is turning out... the whole thing started out with the intention of being done "right" but it somehow seems to keep going past my original expectations...and by that I mean everyone that has been involved.... me included

Thanks as usual for looking, any comments, feedback, questions are as usual fully welcomed 8)

Cheers
Rich

Ok well it appears that my daily gallery bandwidth limit got exceeded in record time today

I have upgraded my account so hopefully they will be up and running again in the morning...if they're not I'm gonna have to get serious with them.

I'm away now for most of the weekend with the race team at Snetterton and then back up at CF workshop on Sunday so won't be able to do anything about it until Sunday night now. :x

Just to answer a couple of posts while I'm here

njord -
Thanks and yes I am totally over the moon with it.
One thing though and I hope this doesn't sound like a dig at you cos it's not meant to but...
I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is far from a "money no object" build, it is self financed the hard way by working my balls off till all hours, selling stuff I never wanted to sell and generally speaking not having much of a life like going out and hitting the pubs and clubs. There is no way I could have afforded to simply stump up a load of cash for the whole project to be done if I wasn't able to do as much of it as possible.

Also it wouldn't have been possible without the backing and support of Andy and Simon @ Custom Fabrication and now of course SGM Racepaint. The work being done is still costing me a few quid of course but certainly nowhere near what it should do as they wanted to use the car as a showpiece for what they can do in exchange for logos on the car (they have the roof all to themselves) and promotion through the forums I'm on and our company.

Like I said, wasn't meant as a dig but I do get alot of people making inaccurate assumptions about my wealth or lack of it. I am in the same boat as anyone else on here... how far you want to go all depends on how much you are willing to sacrifice... oh and bear in mind that the car hasn't seen any meaningful action for 20 months now !! It saw some road work about 9 months ago or so but literally that's it. This has been very much a slow process overall :(

Frank --
Cheers mate, well believe it or not the "original" plan should have seen me out racing it this year but what with one setback after another, not enough time and not enough money I decided to start from scratch and take the long path. I'd love to have it all up and running and back together in time for some testing ready for racing next year but we'll see. This build HAS to be done right...the standards have just gone too high for it to become a throw together job.

Mart, Merlin -
Cheers guys, I'm glad I'm not the only one that ended up speechless and drooling

Dave and Dave -
Fingers crossed the pics will be back up for you soon

As I said in my post - The car will be making a personal appearance at Rally Day @ Castle Combe on Sept 19th. Obviously it won't be there on it's own  - myself, Si and Sam - Performance Autoworks - along with Andy and Simon Custom Fabrications) will be there with a couple of other cars. Come along, enjoy the day and come and have a chat
8)

Sorry I've not updated recently, not had much time to spend on t'internet for one reason or another so I'm playing catch up a little bit here.

So anyway...here we go... Update Phase 1

So from the last update there were a few more bits left for Custom Fabrications to do before releasing the car back to me.

Cast your mind back to when I suggested that this item was going to get the weight saving treatment

Image

Well that's the front subframe which has suspension compression struts (sometimes known as traction bars) running to it and also carries the front engine torque mount.
After much thought and discussion we came to the conclusion that rather than mess around trying to save some weight out of the bloody great ugly thing it would be far better just to make a new front end which would be stronger, lighter and incorporate adjustable compression struts. Here's the results in all it's nicely triangulated rose jointed goodliness 8)

Image

Image

Image

As a farewell present to the car the guys went all show and shine to produce this nifty little battery cover. They are also building me a custom oil catch tank which will sit really rather neatly out of the way at the back of the engine bay.

Image

And so with that, it was over to me for it's welcome return home 8)
Time to get a couple of shots that I've not been able to get so far

Image

Here's a reminder of the old rear end view complete with spare wheel well

Image

And here's how it looks now, complete with "nerf" bar to protect the rear floor....something that apparently was common practice in the Super Touring era.

Image

This is the underside of the boot floor/rear chassis now with suspension and subframe in place. This will all need to come apart again for further modification and freshening up of the suspension.

Image

I then couldn't resist the temptation to rest the carbon bonnet in place and quickly fit the bootlid and spoiler back into place...just to get an idea you understand

Image

Image

Image

Ok so that's where we were at as of Saturday the 5th September.

Now although I've said all along that there will be no rushing and no desperately trying to make it to deadlines there was one that has been looming up and that's Rally Day @ Castle Combe on 19th September.
Ourselves (Performance Autoworks) and Custom Fabrications have a trade stand at this event and we both want my car to be there and built up to a level but the standards have to be high...what a drag

What with work commitments amongst other things I really wasn't sure how much was going to get done...and more to the point I had to find all the stuff I took off the car and start getting it into some kind of presentable condition to bolt back on .
I still had/have plenty of plans and ideas of things I want to do during the build up so some things will need to be gone back over after the show.

Anyway...onwards and upwards....... chuffed to bits to have it back home and my god it doesn't half pump up the old enthusiasm 8)

Build Up 2 - Body Parts

Ok, so we're onto Phase 2 of the update now :D

This will bring you all bang up to date with where I am with the car at the moment.

To be honest I didn't know where to start so I figured the back end was as good a place as any.
Had a good sort out of all my sets of rear lights (found out I've got a total of 6 pairs ), jumbled all the bits up to create the absolute best condition pair I could. Gave them a bloody good clean and then refitted them along with the newly cleaned boot seal.
Decided now was as good a time as any to fit the spangly recessed aero fuel filler and neck - Perfect 8)

Image

Image

Image

Next was to tackle the bootlid. I'd already bolted on the boot spoiler so all I had to do was mount the plastic number plate holder/surround. You may remember that I cut out all of the inner skins of bootlid that once held this piece in place so the best and lightest option was to bond it back in.
You can just make out in the second pic that I left a small section of the original metalwork in place to allow for mounting of number plate lights...I know you don't need them for a race car but all along the plan has always been to get this thing road legal (or near enough anyway ), it just makes testing things so much easier.

Image

Image

What next? Well how about some doors?
I was all set to bolt the hinges on and mount the doors when something dawned on me... these hinges are bloody heavy !!
I don't know if anybody here has felt the weight of a fully loaded Prelude door but let me assure you that they are very heavy so obviously Mr Honda needed to ensure it's hinges were suitably heavy duty...fair enough.
Thing is my doors are gutted bare so weigh nowhere near as much as they used to...in fact I'd say a third of the weight easy !
I think the following pics tell their own story

Image

Image

Image

Yes that really is 620grams for a bloody door hinge !!

Image

Image

Image

Yes that's 260grams saved per hinge....a bloody kilo in door hinge material...who'd have thought it!

All 4 done, primered and painted

Image

Now we can bolt them on and get them pesky doors hung...what a fussy ballache of a job but worth it in the end to get them sat nicely

Image

Image

Figured now was as good a time as any to mount the rear bumper, unwrapped it from it's protective paper which it had sat in since Kris had painted them months ago only to find that the inside of them looked a bit on the messy side - different shades of red, some orange and some black untreated original plastic. Now I know you'll not ever really see that but i know it's there and that wasn't good enough so a nice dusting of satin black later made things so much nicer 8)

Image

While that was drying I thought I'd take a look at the front one....unwrapped it and yep the back inside could do with the same treatment but more importantly the visible black recessed areas were looking pretty tired. Kris did a great job of masking them off previously so all it took was to mask off the surrounding area, a quick going over with a scotch pad and a dusting of satin black to restore to it's former glory

Image

Image

While I had the black paint out I decided I might as well tidy up the rest of the bumper and front end parts such as the nostrils, bumper mounts (previously lightened many years ago), grill mesh, indicators, and fog lamp surrounds (brake ducts).
The indicators are a bit of a tempory thing really as I intend to relocate the indicators upto where the current sidelights are (part of the headlamp). The old indicators will then be replaced with either black painted ally plate or carbon.
Now I know all this stuff is purely cosmetic but I'm only ever gonna do this build once and I want it to look the absolute nuts when it's finished, the whole thing has to be done to a high standard ...that's very important to me.... it also has to look nice
Once done, the wings and headlamps could be bolted into place using some rather nice lightweight aluminum bolts 8), then the bumper fitted complete with all it's freshened up black fittings

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Freshly painted roof rails/trims refitted. That in itself is a real testament to the skill and quality of workmanship from Custom Fabrications - remember, the roof has been removed and refitted on this car yet still the trims fit absolutely perfectly 8)

Image

Ok so I had got to a stage where the bumpers and panels were back in place and looking good, I'd saved some more weight and found a few further areas to save a bit more...what I really wanted to do now was see how the package was going to look on it's race wheels at race height. So it was up in the air, free off and adjust the poor neglected Dampertech/Gaz coilovers, pop the wheels on and drop it off the ramp.

This was about to make or break my enthusiasm and motivation.......

(apologies for the grainy pics..this all happened around 8.30pm on Sunday evening)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Motivated? Enthused?

Well I smiled alot, motivated myself to the fridge, cracked open a tin of Stella and proceeded to drink it with real enthusiasm while wandering around the car eyeing up all the angles......... 8)

I am indeed a happy chap :D

Oh and first thing this morning I decided to try and get a couple of better pics.
There's something kinda Super Tourer esque about it don't you think?

Image

Image

Image

And don't forget - This coming Saturday at Castle Combe is the big annual Rally Day event. We'll be there along with Custom Fabrications, The Lude, Kris' race Civic and a rather tasty Old Skool Lancer Turbo...come along and say hello and take a closer look 8)

As always, thanks for taking an interest.
Questions, feedback, comments are all welcome :D

Hello all :D

Well as usual I have a long list of excuses and reasons for not responding or keeping fully up to date on here. I'll not bore you with them here, I'll just get on and answer some of the comments made since my last update - apologies in advance if I miss anyone out.

First of all, thanks to everyone who has taken an interest or posted comments or asked questions, always happy to answer them it just may take some time so appologies in advance.

Before I get onto specific replies to comments left since my last update I'll cover a few of the more general commonly asked questions...think of it as a kind of FAQ if you like....or consider it random waffling - either way you can choose to read it or just skip through to the pretty pictures in my next post
Perhaps one day I'll run through all the comments/questions and index them on the first post as an FAQ index.

1)
I have been asked by several people why I have revealed so much information about the build so far, surely I should have kept quiet about some things done during the quest for lightness. My opinion is that as part of a Honda community there is no reason why I wouldn't share information and ways I've found to save weight - I hope it can help others in the future with their own projects rather than simply tell people I've saved X amount of weight out of the car and then clam up about where it's gone from.
Most of these things are just found by thinking outside the box and/or looking at things in detail. They are time consuming to do so nobody is going to beat a path to my (work) door and ask for me to do this for them...they simply couldn't justify the costs involved in paying to have this stuff done. Obviously different rules apply when it comes to finding certain engine build tricks that can make or break the difference between one of my engines or a competitors or likewise certain chassis/suspension tricks but mostly I still just tell it and show it like it is.
This can leave me open for criticism which I am happy to accept as long as it is constructive. I don't pretend to know all there is to know, I learn on a daily basis and am always happy to discuss or explain certain ideas with anybody that has an interest in what I'm doing.

Another question asked or comment made several times both on forums and in person is usually something along the lines of :-
"looking good to good to race, will you be able to bring yourself to track or race it?"
OR
"this would be one hell of a show and shine motor. There HAS to be a small (or perhaps) large part of you that doesnt want to take this on track and ruin it?"
I have answered this in a post on another forum which I will now shamelessly cut and paste in here

I understand where you are coming from and I guess there is a tiny part of me that would love to finish the car and then just keep it as my undamaged/unmolested achievement BUT that would of course completely go against everything that I am doing with this car not to mention the fact that it would go against everything that I have done with the car in the past.
Yes I am pretty damn precious about it right now, who wouldn't be precious about something that they've sunk so much of their efforts and passion into?
However, it is being built for a reason and that reason is to go and race !!

I always loved the car looking good but it looked good at a distance... get up close and there were all sorts of scuffs, dents, chips etc from seasoned track use. It's not that I didn't care it's more that I see them as battle scars or trophys.
I'd hate to see it damaged of course but likewise I'll almost be relieved when it gets it's first rubber or bollard scuffs up the paintwork which means I can stop being so damn precious about it.

3)
"So are you going to shed some light Rich as to what plans you have for the engine?"

Well I have several options open to me.
Initially for the chassis set and general testing purposes I will run with a mildly modified H22 or H23VTEC. Basically something that is going to be treated as expendable. There are likely to be lots of hard test miles on track once it's finished and I just want something that will do the job without being something else that needs to be developed at the same time.

I make no secret of the fact that I built and was developing a 2.5lt darton sleeved high comp H22 before the big strip down began. I also make no secret of the fact that I had some small issues that needed resolving with it but on the whole the package was there and felt superb. This is ultimately what will end up in the car...potentially

There is also another option if I want to enter the car into a 2lt catagory.
I have formulated and gradually sourced many of the parts needed to build myself a nice 2lt forged H22 headed screamer. This will be based on a production block and is definately something I want to look at.

All of these can and will be couple together with the Kazz diff'd, 4.64 final drive M2F5 gearbox I have yet to put together.

As a few have mentioned..this really is a bit of a dream project for me and has progressed way beyond what I originally set out to do. This is one of the many reasons that it is taking a while to progress...that and always being at the back of the queue of cars in need of my attention.
When it's finished the last thing I want is to see it done and then think I wish I'd done that differently. I'm sure there will still be some things but that's life...I've done a few bare shell rebuilds of various cars over the years but this one is going to be the best one yet.

Thanks for bearing with me, I'll just run through a few specific comments and then I'll get onto the latest update

I really wouldn't like to put a figure on how much this is likely to have finally cost me in terms of real folding stuff type money. I have a rough idea of where I currently stand which is unsuprisingly quite alarming if you include all the engine build work already carried out before the big strip down started. Lets just say I could have gone out and bought something pretty decent and modern with what I've spent so far..... but that totally misses the point altogether in my opinion.
If I were then to include my man hours on top........ then it really does get into the realms of fantasy land or lunatic asylum levels of spend on a rusty old Prelude

The absence of a front engine mount should not be an issue at all with the ultra stiff mounts in the other 3 locations. I do have the option to install a tension rod style of front mount should I feel the need to, this will simply involve the manufacture and welding of a fixing mount onto the new front crossmember with the tension rod mating up with another fabricated mount in the usual H22 location.

Regarding the traction bar setup. I kinda had a feeling that you would pick up on that and ask the question because they are different to yours.
Remember, our two cars are going to have very different purposes and for that reason some ideas that look similar on paper will also have different solutions.
There are a couple of reasons why the orientation of the front spherical bearing is the way it is, one of them is purely for ground clearance and the other is to do with loadings
The spherical bearing at the LCA end may not even stay as I will also be testing a solid link at that end. Two similar yet different approaches to overcome a specific problem.

Thankyou for your comments, believe me when I say I'm trying not to think of how many hours have gone into this already...and that's not including all the previous many many man hours spent developing the car before the big strip even started. Scary really.
I think the right decision was taken to MiG the shell in the end... the time and grief to TiG it really just couldn't have been justified.
You obviously work in the motorsport world or bodyshop enviroment, hope you don't mind me asking what sort of things you prep?

Great post and thanks for your feedback. Hope I don't get you too frustrated with the very slow progress. The last couple of months have been painfully slow due to too many other commitments etc but I am hoping the next month or two will see some dramatic steps taken one way or another.
Biggest problem is that all the big "in yer face" items have pretty much been fitted and now it's at the point where I can spend say 15-20 hours on it over a weekend and you step back and take a look to see basically very little for your efforts.
Glad to hear we've managed to convert you to the 4th gen .... it's funny really because I am growing ever fonder of the 5th gens

Thanks for sticking with me and sorry as usual for the long post...without further delay I shall now post the latest updates.

Thanks
Rich
