it will mate, just keep at it. i found a wire brush on a drill can bring up the fixed metals really well...

Spray bottle of de-greaser.
Spray bottle of hot water.
Spray, spray, spray, and, spray some more.
Toothbrrushes, q-tips, bottle brush, lots of rags.
Steam cleaner.
Die grinder/wire wheel.
Steel wool.
Metal polish.
Random orbital buffer (under the hood)
TONS of clear drying wax.
Paint brush + dish soap for valve cover.
Many, many, MANY hours.
