Im not worried about killing the engine as i can see there is plenty of oil in the engine and it is circulating fine, its just a bit of strange issue thats developed.Ammo wrote:IF you have issues, and you are worried that you will kill your engine, don't bloody drive it and wait advice of PAW who built it tbh

Never understood how you fill the filter with fresh oil before putting it on. The Type S filter aims down so it all spills out.

Just need to turn your car upside down mateRattyMcClelland wrote:Never understood how you fill the filter with fresh oil before putting it on. The Type S filter aims down so it all spills out.

I always just lube the seal, whack the filter on and let the engine idle for a bit before checking the oil level and topping up as necessary. Tried filling the filter once on the Golf and it just ejaculated oil everywhere.
Hope everything turns out ok with your car Alex, fingers crossed it's just tired oil!
*edited due to the random arse swear filter lol

Has anyone suggested yet, you might have dented your sump around the place where the oil pickup sits. This might make the oil pickup struggle under load but manage ok when not under full load. You haven't scraped over any speed bumps thinking you got away with it have you over the last 4500miles?
I had fluctuating oil pressure on my last H22A engine which PAW pulled out for a fresh H22A7, when I stripped it down, I discovered I had a dented sump but more worrying I found string pieces of silicon inside the oil pickup tube. That was sloshing around in there which probably caused the low oil pressure and why no. 4 cyclinder spun a rod bearing. WARNING: be careful with use of dabs of silicon to seal cam covers or sump gaskets, it appears some people use too much and it ends up in the engine.
I would let PAW investigate this before your engine gets damaged!!

Thanks for the suggestion but the issue I have is the opposite way around.
Under load it's fine it still builds pressure as it should, but the hot idle drops out of range.

Oh yeah, if forgot - you said earlier...
Mine builds no higher than 70-75psi when oil temp is between 85-90 degree C under full load. I thought the oil filter by-pass kicked in around this pressure?
It hot idles at about 15-18psi. Flat cold idle is about 70psi.
Mine guage is a SPA Digital OIL temp/pressure.

pwhor, £200 worth of gauge! Nice!
Mines a £20 auto gauge
Rich did advise it wasn't very accurate at the bottom end, but it's deviated from the usual routine which is what has thrown me and it's only when the engine has had a good run. I've dropped him an email, hes a busy man so he'll get back when he has a chance.
I do think it's the oil giving up, I do a lot more cold starts & hill climbing than I used to as I've recently move. This puts to oil under a lot more strain. I have 4L of mobil1 left, I'm tempted to buy another L and do a filter change with it then see if that sorts the issue. If it does then I have a diagnosis.
