mot failure

well it finaly got an mot today after standing since feb. failed on rear brake efficiency and handbrake

supose it could have been worse, just a case of cleaning and adjusting, i hope

happy days drive it round for a week then take it back after they've worn the rust off

yeh been doing that. the handbrake isnt really working, i had this before when i changed the pads and forgot to reset the hand brake, but this time you can just about feel it, just. infact its so bad it wont even hold the car still while in drive

whip the calipers off, wind the pistons back in, give the system a bleed and reset the hand brake - MOT GOODNESSSSSSS

well did all this along with a good thrashing, took it back today - failed

. seems the driverside rear handbrake is crap, any ideas as to why this is? yes i can turn the wheel with the hand brake on (just) adjusted correctly

can still drive away with the hand brake on

although the left had wheel doesnt turn, just drags along but the right turns without too much effort

the cables are free moving so ok, the equaliser moves in paralel as it should, JUST DONT WORK AAARRRGGGG.

does anyone know what is inside the handrake part of the calliper? how does it actually work?

Take the plastic cover off and make sure the mech is moving properly. It's just a simple spring loaded system external to the caliper, but it does like a good seize.

if it has stretched then the equaliser wouldnt move in parelel, it would move one side further than the other. no not seized mech either

Yeah the spring on the caliper that controlls handbrake tension can get really clogged up with grime and wont let the cable move. Try and give it a clean as IL says. I used a blow torch on mine to cook all the crap off.
