Gen 5 with rusty suspension - cost to fix?

I am looking at buying a relatiely low mileage 5th gen which seems to be in good nick in terms of engine and bodywork and has been serviced at honda dealers each year.

However it's only done 2-3k miles each year so I imagine been sitting still for quite a while.

There is an advisory on the recent MOTs that both front and rear "suspension components" are mega corroded.

Any ideas how much it would cost for a complete refresh of front and rear suspension? I imagine it's more than just the shocks so what parts would I be looking at?

If it's only an advisory, it may be mostly surface rust that can be cleaned off and repainted. On the other hand, if the mounts are rusty, the job could be extensive enough to walk away unless you can get the car for a silly price.

Get a good look at it - but don't simply trust a jack - and see if anything's actually rusted through or has thick scale. If you're still not sure, you could try posting some pictures here.

There are some good Preludes still around, so it's really not worth tackling anything major.

If the various bushes are perished as well, your cheapest option to replacing those will be to go for the Energy Suspension, which are a harder polyurethane bush (Performance upgrade), and that will set you back approximately £400 to replace every suspension related rubber. I'd hate to think how much a full set of genuine Honda bushes would cost!

Then you're probably looking at in excess of £500 to fit the bushes.There maybe bolts to replace as well, which you will want to get from Honda.

All in all add on an extra £1000 the the cost of the car if the bushes are perished.

Looks like an MOT tester being a bit over-zealous.

Looks like surface rust to me. As above, check the bushes. For the rest, get out that wire brush and prepare to get mucky.

Thanks, good to hear that. The car is mine for £2.5k, 60k miles.

4WS has stopped working in the past few weeks but the owner thinks a reset should do it.

before i hand over the cash, anything to look for?
