Special H22a5?

OK so i went to fit a set of ATR cams i got while i was changing the cam belt. They Looked identical to the standard cams. So i decided to measure them and sure enough same lift to within 0.001" and then i drew around the lobes with a bit of card and they was also identical. I went to the internet and checked how to tell if the cams where in fact ATR cams and all the measurements checked out.

Then i got into my manual donor lude and gave it a quick blast and it felt so much slower than my auto and also the vtec kick was nowhere near as strong. I would say i have a special H22a5 from Japan. but i just cant see how or when the engine was tampered with. It came into the country with 40k on the clock and my day was the first owner in the UK. It was 100% standard when we got it so i cant see them changing cams ect. But the Auto Lude just feels in a different league to my manual lude even though the auto has ubber long gears. Both engines are H22a5 so why is there so much power difference? Any clues as to shy the JDM Auto lude feels so much faster? Why did it have ATR cams fitted already? Maybe its just a JDM thing.

OK i just got my mate to drive the manual and me in the Auto. Had a quick comparison and the auto lude left the manual for dead (about 15 car lengths to 80mph) So we swapped and the same happened when i was in the manual even with my lightning gear changes.

I am stumped TBH. Its almost like the JDM auto lude has the internals upgraded. It still has the duel runner manifold so it isnt that. Maybe it is just a JDM thing.

Thoughts? If you have managed to read through all this

No such thing as a jdm h22a5. There all h22a

Auto jdm h22a is 197bhp
Ukdm manual h22a5 185bhp.

Thats weird as Its a H22a5. Must be a replacement engine. Maybe why it was sold. It could explain it though if the H22A5 block was replaced with all internals from a H22A. But i still dont know why it has Type R cams. A mystery that probably wont be solved. If the car was modified in other areas i could understand it but it was 100% standard. It defiantly already had type r cams fitted though. It is weird for someone to put in uprated cams without at least doing a few minor tweeks to the outside.

If it needed a replacement engine for what ever reason when it came into the UK, and the only one they had available in this country was a H22a5, maybe because they thought it would be down on power over the original H22a they put some Type-S/ATR cams in there to compensate.

Hopefully they would have put the complete Type-S/ATR valve train in there as well.

Hopefully they did. Its done 22ooo miles at minimum on this engine and hasn't seemed to complain about being revved to the limiter on a regular basis. Nafeman i think you are on the money though that makes sense. If ATR/Type-S cams make that much difference though then wow.
