H22a but what one?

Post by James 5th gen » Tue Aug 08, 2017 6:39 am

Ok so I'm picking up a h22a within the week, I don't know too much about the engine so here's where I'm relying on you guys :D

As far as I know it's a Japanese engine, and it's out a gold 5th gen. it's in pieces but I plan to rebuild it as a project on the side. Anyway, if you prelude experts know what some specs are or anything I might need To know please let me know, thanks

These are the only pictures I have right now, it's free so I'll be picking it up regardless, I'm not the biggest fan of the rocker cover but it shows it was red. This dosent exactly guarante anything I know but hey ho

H22a out of a gold JDM 5th gen (gold meaning it wasn't a Type-S or S-Spec as they came in limited colours I believe. Although I didn't think gold was an import colour :? ). Either way, it's likely to be 197bhp, 10.6:1 CR.

If you could find out what gearbox was on it that would help narrow it down.

Also if the red on the cam cover is the original paint, then it could be a JDM red top, so type S or s-spec :?: pretty sure I've seen sparkle yellow type S's before

On the head, above the exhaust manifold you will see a bunch of circles with numbers in it. That manifold looks like a P13 manifold so most likely not a euro R.

Also look for a VIN tag on the back of the block somewhere can't remember exactly where but it should be riveted onto the block. That might help as well.

You're looking for pde or p13 as the code.

:? Why has someone taken a grinder to the head? It's not just to remove the vtec wording, they've gone a bit happy everywhere!

Do you know why it's been taken to bits?

Worth having if free though, agree!

so the reason its in bits is because the cam seal went and of course oil went everywhere. the guy who gave it to me said he took out the engine straight away and was going to replace the bearings just in case they were damaged.

he had another engine spare so he ended up just replacing it. looking at it today he recons new bearings and cam seal would do the job. but i plan to rebuild it anyway.

been told today its not the 220bhp engine, still cool though 8-)

finally, i want some advice from you guys. turbo or no turbo?

whilst i'm going to rebuild the engine i was thinking of what way to go, could you guys give me a rough idea of price vs power vs reliability please. a turbo would be nice but i know some of you have a very nice bhp without one.

one of my concerns is an ecu, i really don't know anything about them so i wouldn't know where to start

and if i did decide to keep it na, what sort of parts should i be going for? i know its probably an annoying question but thanks for any answers.

Measure the opening of the throttle body. Red top H22a's have the 62 mm TB (~64 mm opening) while the other engine have the 60 mm TB (62 mm opening).

I'd stay with NA with a small NA setup, cheaper than turbo and will ultimately be more reliable. Put an H22a7 intake manifold on, get it tuned and jobs a good 'un.

Look for a P28/P30/P72 ECU and have the Hondata S300 installed. You can buy them new from places like Htune.

Turbo build for lots of power you can do much more cheaply than a big n/a build, but... Don't expect it to last. If you want a turbo build that lasts, it's lots of dosh.
Small n/a power hikes aren't expensive, but if you want bigger n/a power gains it's a lot of cash and you won't see anything like the power return you get with a turbo build. Should be more reliable though.
There's a couple of big turbo (ddoubledanny, mr_drc off the top of my head) and n/a builds (darf/dino's is a good one, also off the top of my head) on here that have had loads of dosh spent on them. Sir_si also ran some less expensive turbo builds with varying degrees of success (great power and one build that lasted well, a couple of others not so).
