4ws ecu repair what needs looking at
Post by firstlude » Sat Jun 03, 2017 8:57 pm
hi all i have this issue with my 4ws not working read the code which i think is 71, seems the ecu suffers from bad solder joints to the main relays , is there anything else i need to check why i have the ecu apart

I never opened any of these units but i suppose that they should have some capacitors on the board.
So if you open it, it surely be a good thing to replace them, as the aluminium electrolitic capacitors are known to leak when become old.

refitted the ecu today and hey presto no more 4ws warning light staying on
but still no steering from the rear
it just does like a little twitch and thats it no real movement its almost like the rear steering rack is jammed so looks like i am going to need to give the rack the once over

That's a bummer.
Check that no-one has fitted a locking pin?

it seems this post kinda runs with another i have for this car but thought i would post my findings here as it completes this post to a finish which may help others , having overcome some other problems i finally got the car into the workshop and over the pit to check the rear rack over and sure enough someone had fitted a locking pin , once this was removed i have a fully working 4ws system
so if you have a 4ws fault first check is the ecu solder joints anyone who isnt up to doing the soldering if you cover the p@p i am happy to do the soldering for free

Blimey, amazing that someone had fitted a locking pin and not removed (and even more amazing that it hasn't damaged the rack/motor/ecu on the rear setup, as a result of it being in there so long with the car driven!)
Anyway, glad you've got it sorted
