Clutch Pedal Randomly Hit The Floor?

Post by Jackson Bondy » Wed Jul 19, 2017 12:23 pm

Hi all,

Bit of a random one today. Last night I was out in the Lude, I'm driving along and I literally place my foot against the clutch pedal just as I get ready to change gear. Suddenly there's a *thunk* followed by me desperately searching for the pedal  Luckily I was in a 30 and it was quiet.

The weird thing was the car was still in gear! After a few seconds I managed to hook my toe under the pedal and pull it back up. It popped right back up and has been fine since.

Obviously this suggests to me it's just an issue with the pedal. Has anyone had this before or know what I should check? I've had a nose at the service manual and the pedal assembly seems pretty complex so don't want to just go and start messing around with it.

Cheers

Most likely clutch master or slave cylinder, or both. Check the fluid, if it's low, check up around the master cylinder behind the pedal in the footwell, and at the slave cylinder at the front of the gearbox for leaks.
Both fairly common, both fairly cheap. I've done mine a few times over the years.

That is weird that it started working again.

I would have said definitely one of the cylinders as Benny says had you not said that, but could also be where the master bolts to the pedal has come loose and randomly slipped off the bracket momentarily, which would be a nice easy fix.

The pedal end is quite simple to see how it works once you stick your head up there.

Agreed, I've actually had the same though - I just put it down to the pedal effectively being pumped that it started working again?.. When I checked the master was leaking so sorted that and all good.
The clutch spring is quite strong I must admit.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
No loss of fluid and no sign of leakage from either cylinder, will keep an eye on it over the next few weeks but haven't had any problems since.

Going to check the pedal out at the weekend if it dries up a bit!

Of course now I'm running into issues starting
New battery or starter coming soon me thinks!

In that case I can only think it was/is air in the system. If it happens again, try bleeding it again perhaps?
