Microsoft Security Essentials +1.
Very lightweight compared to others but I have to admit, doesn't always pick everything up.
I've found for the most part that if you can also avoid installing Java you will also avoid a lot of driveby downloads. I didn't bother re-installing it since I re-built my machine and not had a virus since.
Also not visiting dodgy sites or installing cracked software helps.. A LOT.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I've used Avast for a couple of years now and it seems to be quite good, so I'll stick with it for the AV.
As Duo says, the boot time scan is good.
If it lets me down, I'll check out Microsoft Security Essentials.
I haven't actually looked to see what came installed with Windows 7.
I'll definitely give CCleaner and Malwarebytes a go.
If I'm still unhappy, I'll refer back to this thread for some of the other recommendations.

Nothing, as far as I'm aware they're not allowed to distribute it with the system (they have to let people choose!).Pushki wrote:I haven't actually looked to see what came installed with Windows 7.![]()
I'll definitely give CCleaner and Malwarebytes a go.
The people that make CCleaner also do Speccy (for seeing hardware and temperature information) and Defraggler (for defragging), both of which are good as well

Q: Is Microsoft Security Essentials designed to replace Windows Defender?
A: No but if you are running Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need to run Windows Defender. Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to disable Windows Defender in order to manage the PC’s real-time protection, including anti-virus, rootkits, Trojans and spyware.
