4g Steering rack - common to all cars?

Just a quick one, folks, seeing as I seem to have sprung a leak on the driver side of my steering rack ...

Is the rack common to all cars in the 4th Gen range, and across all years? e.g. can I use one from a 1991 2.0 in my 93 2.2 BB4?

only differences is between 2ws and 4 ws , you can use any 92-96 prelude steering rack from a 2ws prelude in your 2ws BB4

Tbh, I expect you could use a 4ws rack on a 2ws lude, too.
When you say it has sprung a leak, are you sure it isn't just one of the boots or the pressure equalising hose that's perished and needs changing?

Hi @Angus, sorry to butt in, but you may have the same problem I had a couple of months ago, as wurlycorner has just described.
My passenger side wheel was liberally coated with greasy crud and my trusty spannerman immediately said it was the boot that was knackered. He was absolutely right and so we fitted a new set and the problem was solved.

As everyone knows, I'm no expert in technical stuff, but why not have a quick gander at the boot and see if it's split or perished. With a bit of luck, that may be your problem so it's a relatively quick and economical fix.

Cheers guys ... to be entirely honest I haven't looked at it too closely yet (weather is a factor!). I just noticed an oily rainbow puddle coming out from around the front wheel yesterday in the wet, and noted that the level in the reservoir had gone down to under the minimum. Filled up last night, waiting to see what happens today.

Don't think it's a CV boot - the stuff on the ground was very liquid, and didn't taste like grease or engine oil.

If it's one of the steering rack boots (both are under a couple of years old), I'd still be expecting any drip to result from a leaky seal inside there ... the position of the drip once I moved the car does look like about the driver's side of the rack.

Part number for the RHD rack, by the way, is 53601-SS0-950. Confirmed that with the local Honda dealer (can't be had from the Lings website EPC because the part has been discontinued).

While we're at it, there's quite a handy EPC for import BB1 and BB4s (as well as a heap of others) here:

OK, appears to be the high pressure feed hose that's dribbling. Better than the rack, but not too handy to find.
