5G timing belt come with an auto tensioner or is it manual?
Post by Lankysod07 » Fri Oct 28, 2016 10:40 am
Hello all,
I've got some rattling noise coming from my engine, when u rev the car it's fine but when the revs come back down I get this rattling noise from the left hand side of the engine.. Haven't inspected it properly yet so could be exhaust related.. But on a very quick sound check it sounds like it's xoming from inside the timing belt housing.
Could it be the timing belt lose? I always thought the 5G had an automatic tensioner?
Cheers all
Brandon

They do have an auto temsioner (unless it's had a manual conversion), but they can fail. Any idea when the belt was done last and what's your current mileage?

Unsure if it's has a manual conversion to be fair, when I bought the car about a year and a half ago it was on 90k and now sits at 102k. Timing belt was done the same time as the manual gear box was put in about 2 years ago.

People don't always replace the auto tensioner when they change the belt, so there's a chance it's still running on the original. Either way you really want to find out what it is before driving the car again. Certainly stay out of VTEC if you have to drive it

Had a more in depth look, definitely not exhaust caused.
My battery terminal was jumping off so I've tightening that back up.
Started up fine now noise, after it warmed up started doing it again, definitely coming from around the area of the the timing belt casing. Doesn't sound like knocking tho, sounds more like a rubbing/maybe bearing sound and it's intermittent, not always doing it every now and then, when I think about it, this noise has probs been on and off for the last couple of months??
Might get my spanners out later and just ensure all the little bolts are done up tight on the casing to the timing belt.

It's a Pita that on the h22 you can't take the covers off to see what it runs like, without taking the rocker cover off first
You sure it isn't the power steering pump, alternator or bottom pulley?

As it's intermittent and I feel if I out more stress on the belts like having the lights, stereo, and demister on it can make it more prominent, it could well be one of the ancillaries or the bottom pulley! If it was the bottom pulley it could also be that vibrating the plastic casing on the T belt. I'll get some tonight and see if I can fathom some more detail on what's going on! Thanks guys!

On my bb4 i had a horrible noise that i cant describe which turned put to be the crank pulley might be worth a listen, if your a little bit skeptical about a noise inside the crank case cheeky tip time... Use a screwdriver hold the tip to the case and put your ear on the end it helps you hear odd sounds alot better! Might be somthing you already know of course but if not its a nice old school mechanics tip i was shown which has comes in handy

OK so managed to have a good listen after work today, definitely not crank pulley or ancillaries from what I can make out, no wobbles or creaking from any of them.
However, I'm not sure if it's the timing belt, I think I can hear it louder near there as it's plastic, the noise seems more apparent with a screwdriver held against my ear next to the dizzy and under the rocker cover in the middle, any ideas?
I've made a video of the sound aswell. ..see below:
