Nathan's '89 CA5 Accord Aerodeck

Got a car that isn't a Lude? There's no condemnation here. Tell us about it!

New Chrome Tail Pipe End Finishers Fitted

Post by NafemanNathan » Fri Apr 27, 2012 11:52 am

In part of the preparation to get the Aerodeck ready for Japfest I wanted to do something about the rather bland back box. I've had an entire new system from the downpipe back, and there weren't many options for backboxes (not here in the UK anyway)...

So I decided to go down a route I wouldn't normally follow, and bought these...

Image

Image

Slapped them on for a trial fit, but wasn't too keen on the overall effect...

Image

Image

Image

They stuck out quite far too...

Image

I could have obviously just shortened the back to allow me to slide them on a bit further, but I also felt they turned down too much too, so I had this done to them instead...

Image

Image

Now obviously the chrome plating had been removed from the lip edge, which would leave it open to corrosion...

Image

So, I masked up, leaving a very small edge...

Image

And sprayed in heat-resistant metallic grey paint...

Image

To achieve...

Image

And then once again on the car I was much happier (though sadly the light was fading)...

Think that's probably the longest post ever dedicated to tail pipe end finishers

I think prelude back boxes fit as mine looks more like a lude one than yours. They look sweet though.

I want the RWD one too!! That's awesome!

I've got a Prelude backbox actually, so I might do a comparison. A 5th gen Prelude system can be made to fit with a few tweeks as well ;-)

Go to a powerflow dealer... or get solidfab to make you a backbox 8-)
Definately approve of the shortened tips. When I saw the 1st pic of the down angled tips I was like :(
But when I scrolled down and saw you had shortened them I was like

I think mine's a 3rd gen Prelude back box, but I'm not too sure. I have the schematics and reference numbers for all generation Preludes and Accords, so I'll have a butchers at them at some point.

Well the system on there at the moment (barr the manifold) I fitted brand new when I got the car and I'm not in it for performance, so the end finishers were literally just to make it look better ;-)

However, once the H22a's in there, I'll be giving Alan a call ;-)

@Dom, cool, it'd be good to know what works in case a bargain ever pops up... The conversion isn't going to happen for a long while ;-)

Just had a look at the parts, I'm 99% sure I have a Prelude exhaust system on my 'deck as the back box pipe where it goes into the centre pipe is a lot shorter than the schematic indicates, and looks closer to the length of the Prelude ones. I have the sticker from when the downpipe and centre pipe were replaced somewhere, so I'll check the part numbers on there.

Does yours have quite a deep rumble to the exhaust note at all by the way, cos mine does, and it doesn't seem like the sort of thing that Honda would have had from the factory, which makes me think mine is a Prelude system, but without a cat in it.

Well my system is all after market, not Honda, but yes it's always had a nice deep rumble 8) ;-)
