Who here has build his own H23 vtec?

Post by hondaddict » Sat Aug 20, 2016 10:55 am

Hello everybody! :D

Since 4 years now ( or a little more), i have in mind to build my own H23 vtec.
So i have read a lot of topics about this build, on several forums, and i believe i have a good idea of which way to go... ... but i may be wrong

I also start to collect some parts to do my build and actually here are the parts i have:

-complete H23A2 block, in good shape.
-complete PDE head
-a set of P5P-JO pistons
-a set of PDE-E pistons
-an Accord Type R to put the engine in ...

You may have guess why i'm planing to do this build, my lovely "black anvil" weight too much to be very fun, even if i love to drive it, and i don't want to remove too much weight from it, to keep it comfortable and pleasant.

So if someone here is experienced about this build, let's talk about it! :D

What i'm planning to do:

-refresh the block: i want to overbore it to 88 mm
-balance the crankshaft
-work on the head runners

There are some points about which i didn't find any clear answers, for example about the rods bearings or the pistons pins.

So any input will be appreciate! :D

Thanks for your input Mercutio :D

I have already searched on several places : PreludePower, Honda tech, Rosco racing,... I was hoping someone has tried this modification here

I also see that 4thgenPhil was tempted to do it but i didn't know if it is still in his plan or not

So i will share with us the issues i will met :D

I know what you are talking about Mercutio, previously i began to buy parts for previous projects i never finished...

First i was planning to do a B20A7 with a B16A2 head and i bought all the needed parts but resell all before i start anything.. by lack of time and the work to do was really hard.

Then i bought pistons for another build, a high comp B20A7, i still have the pistons but no B20A7 or 3rd gen Prelude, i bought the Accord and it takes me too much time to make it run that i decided to sell the Lude ... ... once again, lack of time.

But at the same moment, i began to buy some of the parts for the H23 vtec build, so this time i really want to finish it    , we will see if i go to the end this time...

About the tendance of the H23 vtec to blow out, i believe ( but i'm not sure) that i have found one of the main reason of the problem, but once again we will see if i'm right or not

In all case, even if i build this engine, i will keep my H22A7 , in case of any problem on the H23.

Yes, you are right  but the specs of the "bluetop" are not really extraordinary and if i bought one of these and if i have to open it for installing high compression pistons... it will cost me much more than building my own block i presume...

I got the H23A2 for pretty cheap, 100 euros with the gearbox, so it is a good beginning :D

I will have some news from some machine shop i have contacted in a few weeks, actually it is Holiday and most of them are closed.

Hello. Not done mine.....yet although I'll throw it together once mines finished although plans have changed/expanded.

I could write a whole book on what the plans are with it.

P5p are 11.1 comp type S pistons arent they?

Thanks for the input 4thgenPhil :D

You are right, P5P-JO are the Type S pistons, with a CR of 11.1 , they gave the same CR than with the PDE-E pistons but they got a "normal" skirt .

If you write a book about changing plans, i'll be happy to translate it in french, and i'll also add some chapters of my own life
