OMG insurance

Post by littlefeller » Tue Apr 24, 2012 11:59 am

just thought i would share this with you all, just incase any of you are in the same situation.
got home this morning to find a discution going on in the house between my misses her son and daughter, goes as follows.
ben the son (youngest) just passed his test, so daughter insures him on her insurance as a named extra driver but now wants to buy a new car and give her old car to ben (20).
however as he would be the owner/driver of said vehicle (pug 106 quick silver 1.4) insurance (if he can get it) over £2800, so daughter sugests my misses (his mother) is main driver and he is added to the insurance (this is called fronting) so i point out that as he is the main driver this is illegal and as such the insurance would be void, to this the daughter replys thats how i have insured the car for 3 years (her boyfriend is named as the main driver) :o   OMG what the hell. how many more people do this :?

It's quite common in young people. I did it for the first 2 years (17-19) with my dad as owner/policy holder.

Yes it is strictly illegal, but unless they monitor your vehicle, they're very unlikely to know.

However, if you mrs has her own car of which she is the owner/policy holder then suspicions might be raised. My dad had a company car at the time so didn't have his own insurance policy.

wait they can, often these days in your parents name with a young driver its more expensive.

bonus can help, but not much

 omg how many more, ok im not a law abiding citisen either. however imagine the senario - son goes out for a drive with his mates, theres an accident ( they happen which is why we have insurance) one or more of his mates are hurt or worse, do you think there parents would let it lie that its possible he wasnt actually insured

yes my misses does have her own car, which makes it worse. i have no problem with lying and to me family comes before the law of the land, but what if something goes wrong.

the named main driver has to be the main driver or its void

umm 3 years ago i said to my 17 year old son what car do you want craig, saxo vtr please.
how about a 1.2 corsa.
if thats what it got to be then ok.
priced insurance at some stupid price and said sod this so his nan bought and insured a saxo vtr with him as a named driver, free disabled tax and full comp for less than £800.
then he passed his test and they added another £800 to the policy but still cheap.
unfortunately thats how it is.

I think you're looking at this in the worst possible light.

How will the insurance know that your son is the main driver of said car? How will they know that it's not a case of your son borrowed his mums car on the rare occasion he wanted to take his mates to a football match/cinema/whatever it is young people do these days?

I bet there are loads. I didn't do this myself as my 1.2 Nova only cost me £650 (the most I have ever paid for insurance) fully comp in 1998 :D. I know that some insurance companies offer NCB for named drivers so it isnt so much of an issue, but previously having a parent as the main driver only hurt you in the long run as you wernt gaining any NCB.
