simonc wrote:@Greg-SiR, Hey Greg, how much of a faff is it to take out the instrument clusters and the plastic covers?
I'm going to be fitting a new petrol/temp gauge in the next week or so, and would like to share any 'do this', 'don't do this' or 'watch out for this' type information with my trusty Monkeay D'Grease.
Anything you could pass on that could help us would be great to hear. Thanks. ;)
It's very easy mate,i've swapped out the gauges before and the clocks once you get the face trim off and down it's just a few screws and the instrument panel come away.
Not alot can go wrong which is good in my books
Briefly pop out both tweeter covers from the dash corners then look up from the displays there is about 8 screws holding in the dash ceiling cover which runs from left to right, bit fiddly as not much room so get smallest Phillips head known to man!
Once thats out the fuel/temp gauge has pressure point brackets holding it in place just use a flathead to release one at a time(i lost 2 on each car due to brittleness) then the screen cover comes away, now there is some screws holding in the section you want out on both sides, after doing them there is some back and forth motions as it's a bit of a squeeze in there but be patient and it will come out then just the Green plugs to lift out from top and left side and it's all yours.
Now you can work on it outside the car, just a few screws on the back of the unit and you have access to all internals needed.
Probably my third time doing a dash strip on my cars and i could prob manage 15 mins each way now but first time was a steady 30
Do you have a spare gauge section ready to go in?
I sold a good unit not so long ago, handy to have as alot of owners suffer the dim dilemma at some stage.
Both mine display good though, touch wood.

It's just a way of killing some time and some learning to be got, somethings i have avoided or put off on the Bb4.
I am all good until the day it proves itself to me and then the spending starts but for present it's a work horse on a string.
The battery story to bore yous all well the one in the Bb4 is from RacQ brand new weighing in at 10kg's and costing $175 was fitted to our 99 Crv which is selling so i'll have that so Crv got a $20 Gumtree one instead today and Bb2 got old Bb4's weighing in at 20kg's,in the end all cars have there own power now so no more swapping for starts and i'm $100 or so off that i was going to part for a battery for the project.
Car so far costing in total close to $600,oh pus i gained a Metallica Cd from the headunit so minus $10 = $590ish,nobody wants Cds anymore, they just leave them in the car when selling,it's a good way to get rid of them ;)

@Greg-SiR. That's a very helpful write-up dear boy, thanks a million. :D And yes, I do have a set travelling eastwards as we speak. Hopefully if the God of Airmail is on my side, the package should be here later this week. Thanks again Greg, splendid stuff. :D

Your welcome simonc there is one other little piece you will see that i didn't mention it's held in with 1 screw and joins the tachometer and the gauges display easy peasy.
Just take your time ;) be careful with the gauges cover screen too as it scratches very easy, take it off and put it away in a safe spot.
It's a nice job to do and if you were like me and left it for ages to replace it will be a very welcome fix.

So it got it's second bath, amazing how dirty a car will get been parked away  just from working on it and putting my grubby hands everywhere.

Foggy bulb added to list too.

I hate the Ausdm front reg holder just haven't had the bumper off yet to put in the bin :x
Image
Wheels are growing on me,more so the cleaner i get them, kinda like a Team Dynamics spoke going on there.

All tucked away again 2 P's in a ...,next time it's coming out will hopefully be for its test for roadworthy.

Those wheels have the perfect offset for the lude, could we get more details on them? offset, width etc.

It is,every bloke should have his shed/garage/mancave somewhere to do the bits you want and escape the rest

Only tennants though but when it comes to move time first on the list is a double lock up garage which luckily enough they are pretty standard here but rare in complexes which we are in now, luckily the driveway is good for 3 cars too as we are waiting to sell the old crv after getting a nice Pajero in its place and i have a 17 yr old daughter looking for her first learner car too, still the ludes manage to keep the garage spots.

Soon as Bb2 is good it'll be out and bb4 and Pajero are in,could be a squeeze in there then.

There is a pile in one corner as with all open spaces for small storage that gets over stocked with stuff that should hit the bin or Gumtree but manages to exist and morph!

Other nice touch is the roller door in to the garden you can see from last pic that i could literally fit the car through it and thought of initially but didn't fancy seeing it in the recreational area, plus i could have got lazy then with it out there.
