Seriously, given the torque required for the pulley bolt, there's no way the belt would not slip if your trying to lock the engine at the cams. I've tried it, no chance. If it worked for you, you got lucky. Also I would not fancy putting that kind of stress on a new belt when retightening the pulley bolt.

So i whipped the rocker cover off to check them cambelt and its fine. doesnt even look worn. put it all back together and tried to start her up, a couple cranks more the usual i reckon but started fine, and again. idled for a bit and was fine, took her round the block, gingerly at first then gave her a bit of vtec in second gear. absolutely fine.
Any ideas guys??

Extremely bad mis-fire then?
Take off the distributor cap and rotor arm and check the distributor over?

I don't know - depends what kind of banging you were hearing
But loss of power, banging - misfire was my thought.
If it wasn't a mis fire type banging noise though, then dunno...

I havent no. would it be driving ok if the balance belt had snapped?
It says in the manual to just remove the middle and lower covers. is it that simple after removing the rocker cover? just some bolts and i can get them off to check? is there anything other then the crank pulled that needs to come off? also which way is it the crank pulled shouldnt be turned? is it clockwise?
Thanks for the help mate, i feel a bit lost when it comes to engine stuff! still something i havent really dabbled too deeply in!
