Power steering pump question

Post by Matteo_xxx » Tue Nov 10, 2015 9:39 am

Hi everybody,

i had been dealing with question if i want to install used power steering pump in my car that i had bought from this forum or have it a go with a refurbished one

My friend has killed 3 or 4 PS pumps because the openings were not sealed when they were taken out of the other cars so than dirt went in which killed PS pump.

So my question is does anybody know if i can get a rebuilt PS pump in Europe? I would rather not buy from USA because of import charges.
Or another option is to buy a new aftermarket PS pump, does anybody know where i can get it?

Or maybe i should take my pump to a specialist where he will take it apart and than clean it, but not sure how much that would cost me, i hope not too much lol

Thanks for your thoughts!

:? Really killed 4 pumps because of that?
I'm very, very surprised. It should be perfectly possible to fit a used one and if you have any concerns about any dirt having got in it before fitting, it should be perfectly possible to adequately clean it / flush it through before fitting.

I'd suggest more like there is still swarf in the system from the original one failing, that hasn't been flushed out properly and has chewed up the replacement used one? Either that, or something else in the system is continuing to fail and put new swarf into the system.
Is the cooler in good order? If that is corroded and leaking, it will be putting rust and moisture into the system that will cause the pump (and rack) to fail.

Im with wurly on this - must be another issue
Ive owned my lude for 15 years and done 160,000miles before the bearing in the ps pump went - i replaced it with a used OEM pump two years ago with no issues :)

what ps fluid are you using?
im sure oem PS fluid is the only option.. :?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^This is correct any other fluid will kill the system especially if your mixing it

It is commonly though that you should only ever use Honda PAS fluid.

Thanks for your thoughts guys, i will have this informations in my mind for the future. I will take the pump to a specialist for inspection where he will probably clean it and install new seals and i dont have anything to loose because i already bought it :)

Not sure on which 4g prelude he had PS failure because he had alot of them before and he did brake 9 until now including my ex 4g VTEC :)

Yes, he has worned me about using only an oem PS fluid.
