does sound like the iacv could be doing something as the ecu does tell the alt to run in full power or reduced power mode

Problem sorted!
Forget about the amp thing, I'll sort that another day
but my revs are no longer dying when various electrical items are turned on 
As this thread suggested I was beginning to suspect the IACV might have been the culprit, so today I removed the induction pipe, turned the engine on (it was already warm) and put my thumb over the IACV hole in the throttle body. The revs lowered slightly, then I took my thumb off again. I did this a few times. I also revved it a little whilst my thumb was over the hole. I then blasted some carb cleaner in the throttle body. I gave several blasts and again, revved the engine a few times. After doing so I tried turning all the electrical items on again and...

Note the horn toot Max managed to get in right at the end there
I gave up asking him to be quiet whilst I tried to record that 
Anyway it's absolutely amazing to have the car driving properly again
