eBay Coilover sleeves

Guys

I have bought a set of http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190433493096? ... EBIDX%3AIT

I know the ride will be crap but as I plan to use the Prelude for less than a 1000 miles year and my daily ride is a boring Peugeot I don't mind.

I actually want to bounce, rub and scrape everywhere!

So other than 'I should save up and buy expensive coilovers' does anyone have any advice on how to fit these / modifications to the standard struts required / additional parts required to fit.

Mate, it's not that they're crap, it's that they're actually really dangerous and tbh no-one on here is sure how they're even allowed to sell them. Bouncing rubbing and scraping is one thing, dying in a crash is quite another.

If you want to scrape you'd actually be safer removing the springs completely. At least you'd know where you'd stand then.

Yep. There is much debate about whether coilover sleeves are ok or not. I'm not 100% sure there is necessarilly actually anything wrong with well made sleeves themselves (the theory is ok) but what is definitely not good is using them with oem springs (the spring rates aren't then correct) and what is 100000000% sure is that using them with 25+ year old own springs is downright dangerous. Take a look on my breaking thread for the phantom grey 4g lude to see what happens with coilover sleeves on old oem springs...

As for lowering your 3g, be aware that due to their age, you will definitely tear the upper suspension arm bushes, so replace them before you start.

If you are using the original springs (cut or squashed by coilover sleeves) be aware that they will break and you will smack the top arms into the suspension turret. See my 3g breaking thread to see that...

To lower properly (safely/reliably, but still in a budget) you will need to replace the top bushes and then use pukka lowering springs. You may still need updated dampers though (not sure on oem 3g dampers coping well with lowering?).

Original ones wouldn't... Not the amount I imagine he intends to lower anyway.

We know that 4g oem dampers stand up fine, so 3g might too. Just no experience on here to go on..?

Incidentally, does anyone know whether you can get 3g lowering springs?
And are gaz the only option for coilovers for them?
(curious orange at work)

Comparing my '89 Aerodeck dampeners to my '89 Prelude dampeners, I'd recommend replacing them.

I dont wish to upset anyone but I will be putting them on regardless.

Thanks Iain for your advice - I will look to replace the top bushes.
