Crunchy gears at high revs.
Post by Bludge » Sun Sep 06, 2015 4:39 pm
My box is crunching all gears at high revs. i was having a problem with 3rd into 4th a while back and was advised to stick in some of the Amsol (?) gear oil, which i never got round to.
I think the clutch needs replacing, and i have just found a very slight leak on the clutch master cylinder behind the pedal.
Is it possible the small leak and the clutch on its way out could be causing the crunch, or is it likely im gonna need to stick a new box in there? dont wanna go dropping the expensive oil in if i end up having to replace the box.
Cheers!

Fix the leak put new fluid in and see what happens. That's the cheapest option and no brainer really.
Leaky fluid means less hydraulic pressure to engage the clutch meaning clutch never fully releases and grinds the box.

I didnt think about the loss of pressure, cheers for that!
i was gonna do the master cylinder first to see if it makes a difference. only reason i didnt want to chuck the oil in is that im proper hard up at the moment, and if the general consensus was the box needed replacing i didnt want to waste it!

There is a nasty juddering when you pull off from stopped in first, and there is a whining noise that goes away when you push the clutch pedal down.semicolin wrote:Sounds like a loss of pressure causing the clutch to not fully disengage.
What makes you think the clutch is on its way out?
Sounds like a plan, might even be on the cards with a possible change in career, but im not getting my hopes up. i have been pinning all my hopes on the lottery so far.Donald wrote:Become a student, the gov will throw @wurlycorner's money at you and you can live the life of Riley.

4th gen gearboxes are very well made imo so unlikely to fail if maintained properly.
go for the genuine Honda OEM ATR clutch at about £150 if your changing it
i think you should still try some amsoil and take it from there
its got to be the cheapest least hassle option
