first track day! guess what!?

Post by gb-lude » Sat Aug 22, 2015 8:16 pm

He guys!
Worked hard again to get my car track ready. found some new hinges for my bonnet, also had a new windshield fitted.
Checked the valve clearence again, one intake was a few 0.0 mm out but the rest was perfect.
fitted the passengerseat and seatbelts, rollcage padding, a small 12V fan as it was way too hot!
rear towstrap and front to hook fitted.
wheels aligned with the settings recommended by Merlin , thanx bro, car drives great!

Then it was trackday! borrowed my dads car and rented a trailer , just didnt want to take the risk!
Loaded my dads car with all the things I would possible need and a set of wheels with the 888s.
decided to drive with my 18s on road tires first.

Everything was good , bought 3 sessions of 20 min and put on my race suit.

Problem 1, The cage is way to close like I said before. can hardly move my head.
Poblem 2, I cant see SH#t .. my mirrors are too small and the rear spoiler too low.
Problem 3...... well I broke the turbo... :?

Look at the video! This is my first lap on the track ever! didn't have much time for the race lines as I was feeling the car and minding the other cars comming up from behind. Luckily I had company of a guy who has done it loads before!

It was alot of fun, car handles very well and even the brakes where holding up. Had to let some cars by a few times.

After the second to last corner at 2:16 I shifted and it helt back for a second. you can clearly hear it, this is when in knew something was wrong. But in the next corner it seemed ok.

Then at 2:35 I put my foot down and it just didn't go.. no boost and not enough air.. I was just too late for the pits so had to drive another round.
First I thought a IC pipe had come off, but halfway the track I had boost again! for a second or two.. :|

When I came in the pits and back to my trailer me and my friends checked everyting but didnt find a thing.. then we thought it might be the wastegate and disconnected the boost controller.
In the meanwhile I called my tuner.. He asked me If it smoked alot, I said no!
He said the hard words... your turbo seizes because its not getting any oil...

So I disconnected the turbo oil line., turned the engine over and watched some oil comming out..mmm ok..
but the I took the restrictor and filter off..

But what I did after knowing there was all this stuff in my oil I bought a small inline AN3 oil filter so the 0,6mm oilrestrictor wouldn't get blocked..
Checked the filter and it was full!! no daylight comming through .. and maybe only i drop of oil...

I took the filter out and re connected the oil feed.. started the engine... and straight away tons of smoke came out of the exhaust...

Then took the airfilter off the turbo and checked the compressor shaft for play... :suicide:

Its done....finito... broken... felt like I could pull the shaft right out :o
another expensive day..

The only upside is I was looking for a bigger turbo anyway..
the PT6262 looks like a good contender but will do some more research.

Here are some pictures..
car ready to go

Have a long too do list again!

Remove engine
mend the downpipe for the new turbo.
complete manual steering modification
5 lug swap
stoptech big brake kit
redesign part of the rollcage

luckily I like working on my car

Finally I can put a face to the name! :D

Yet more rotten luck, but like you said, you were looking to replace it anyway, just a shame you can't get anything back from selling the old on on.

You've certainly got the right frame of mind for a build like this that's for sure :) 8)

Thanx for the support guys!

Bigger turbo isn't to get more power, not much anyway.
The t3 turbine just can't handle the flow and according my tuner a gt35 or even a gt40 will spool fine.
I have been looking into the PT6262 and am very tempted.
A turbo specialist says a GT30 is enough but don't think he realizes the H22 flows so well.

ALso I need some advice on a final drive.
I have a M2J4 gearbox with relatively short gears (its from a 2.0 non vtec) and need a different fd.

Can anyone talk some sense into me what to get?

plan made, turbo RIP p30

Post by gb-lude » Sun Aug 30, 2015 7:14 pm

Wel hello guys...

After leaving my car in my garage and spending some time with my girlfriend and away for work I decided it was time to make a plan.

Been thinking about it loads... but before I pull the whole car apart I decided to take it slow.

First look at the condition of the engine.
Today I pulled the turbo, drained the oil and took off the oilpan and filter.

Results are below..
-still metal shavings in the oil, also found a few drops of cooling fluid in the oilpan.
- turbo is very very dead... it hasn't shattered the blades but it came very close. It was even leaking oil

My plan now is to take the engine out and have it completely checked. I want every bit off. oilpump, waterpump, bearings etc etc.
Its gonna cost me but not as much as a complete new build engine. compression is good so it can't and its running smooth so it can't be the end.

Only when I know what my engine is going to cost me I can decide on a new turbo.
I NEED SOME HELP with that decision anyway..
my tuneds says my engine flows like a 3.5 liter V6 and can do with an even bigger turbo than a GT35R or PT6262 but I think if I get a dual ballbearing anti surge 6262 and run this at a maximum of 15 psi or about 1 bar I will make 400 + and thats enough I think.

When my engine is out I will do the manual steering rack conversion and modify my rollcage and lots of other things.
But my widebodykit/5 stud conversion and stoptech brakes will have to wait as my bank acount says no .... :|

i'm expecting to have the motor out tomorrow or the day after. hope my guy can look at it soon.
You guys think it will fit in the back of my Audi? ( if I up the suspention)
