is it an import? if so is the converter chip wired properly ? if not that what about the sensor on the gearbox?

Quite possibly what I had on my original dials - used to stick around that sort of speed in very hot weather, then throw a bit of a wobbler. Only ever did it on very hot days, so initially I thought it was a physical problem on the dials, but I couldn't confirm. Swapped them out for EL ones in the end.
Either that or take a look at your VSS connections and wiring, the plug on the top of it can suffer a few corrosion issues etc.

Not an import so most likely a connector fault somewhere.

I will try the VSS connections. Where exactly are these located? I'm planning to tackle this on Saturday.

Most if the time I fiddle with things not much happens...

yeah but fiddling with both wont hurt the car and cleaning any electrical connection can only help
