Rear Brake Overhaul: Beyond the Basics

I'm trying to completely strip down a set of rear calipers, but struggling to remove the sleeve piston and hand brake cam assembly.

I've got this far...

The hand brake cam assembly will pull out about 5mm, but no further.

I imagine the sleeve piston (from the second pic) has to come out first, but there's no lips to pull it out with and I've tried knocking it out. Do I just need to knock it harder?

This is why I don't bother overhauling the back calipers myself!

Not that piston no. I think there's an O-ring on the other end of it, which could be retaining it.

Having checked the manual since tonight it does say...

Caution: Do not loosen the parking nut with the cam installed in the caliper body blah blah blah...

So I wonder if I've sheared off the pin inside which is causing it to stick... Although the mechanism still works.

I think I'll have a go on the other caliper, but without removing the parking nut first.

Not for this no. Should be fairly straightforward, and now I think about it I couldn't have sheared anything as I supported the lever plate that the nut retains. I wouldn't have tested it otherwise... That would be asking for trouble.

At this point all the manual says is remove the sleeve piston

It is loose, I can see it move when I work the mechanism and there's a little bit of side to side play, but it just won't drop out like the manual suggests.

I had this problem the last time I refurbed rear calipers.
I gave up, painted it and reassembled it.
It's been fine since.

Turns out I just needed to give it a proper tap. Hitting the back of the caliper wasn't dislodging it, so I ended up hitting the front of the caliper on to a block of wood on the ground, came out of both calipers straight away

My current issue is whether or not I can get replacement needle bearing cartridges. I want to remove them so I can submerge the whole caliper in derusting solution, but I don't think I can remove them with damaging them and I don't think I can get spares. Looking at Lings the part isn't listed, so I assume it comes pre-installed in the caliper
