Think my 5th gen is chipped

Post by Saab9000 » Mon Jul 06, 2015 12:26 am

Hi all I recently bought a 1998 5th gen with the h22a5 it has a induction kit and a exaust system (dcat back) standerd manifold. And it pulls like a train. My friend just got a 1996 h22a5 prelude w the a full stainless system feels induction kit plus a spoon chip. With the model and modifications etc his prelude should be a good bit faster but it's not in fact my 5th gen seems to be faster ie on the miter way the old 3 horn and go from 40 onwards my lude pulls away every time. I'm starting to think there must be some hidden trickery. Vtec engages at 5100 rpm very agressive crossover any input would be much apreaciated

Sorry just saw that I wrote that my friends prelude is a h22a5 it's not, it's the h22a the 197bhp model non sunroof 2ws and mine is the 185bhp h22a5 with sunroof and 4 wheel steering. I just don't understand how my prelude can be faster as it is a heavier model and doesn't have as good modifications

Welcome to LG!!

If you think you have a different ECU, pull the carpet back from the passenger foot well and have a look.

It could simply be that his car is running crap?

Unfortunately a full service history means nothing.

By rights the JDM 4th gen will out accelerate a UK 97-98 in all gears, excluding 5th gear, due to having a little more power and better gearing. It is the gearing that makes the biggest difference IMO, not the ~10bhp between the stock power of the engines.

Being cynical, and I could easily be wrong, but I would say that it is more likely the difference in performance is due to his car being down on power than your car being massively up on power. But without the both cars going on a dyno and going down the drag strip it is hard to tell.

5th gen ECU's are square. If you have anything other than a square ECU then it may well be up on stock power, depending on any other mods. If you have a rectangular ECU it may be a P28, P30, P72 ECU etc.... but these will be installed with a conversion harness, and depending on the ECU control the Ludes IAB's differently of which you might feel when driving the car. The other white meat is a aftermarket full stand ECU but these are expensive so is rare to see them, especially an otherwise stock car.

Were looking to get them both on the dyno soon to be honest my 5th gen h22a5 is very strong it burns no oil whatsoever I've owned 2 preludes in the past and a few to many other hondas ;-) and I'm very impressed with my 5th gen I've had the car for 8 days now and I'm loving it going to give it a sevice this week the engine oil is like new golden brown but I like to give my cars a service anyway when I get them as I don't know when the geerbox oil was changes I change my gearbox oil every time I change the engine oil I need to learn how to put pictures up on hear do I can start a profile build thread to show yous guys my progress with the lude.

as the years go by even with decent servicing ponies go missing possibly sold at appleby who knows his engine is older and likely ragged a bit more than yours?

It's your call if course, but that's very excessive.
