VSS - Does it really need a PAS connection?

I am going to fit my new clutch to my 4th gen this weekend. Does the VSS really need to be connected to the power steering? I am tired of PAS fluid pissing everywhere whenever I take off my gearbox.

I take it that the two are used for the variable assist power steering?

Yes, the speed of the car, measured by the VSS, varies the hydraulic assistance given. If I remember correctly, without that connection, It'll run at max assistance all the time - aka, megalight.

Do you know if there is anyway to disable the variable power assistance and have it on a basic PAS setup?

Looking at the net, it seems the vss restricts the pass through of PAS fluid when at higher speeds, so if you coupled the two pipes going to the vss together and added something to restrict flow, you'd get heavier all the time.

Sorry I meant to specify that I wanted to disconnected the PAS from the VSS and have a minimal assistance, rather than having constant maximum assistance.

Not sure if this helps, but the side effect of my ATR LSD setup is that I no longer get the speed assisted power steering, and it's heavier at lower speeds, which I think is what you're after

I wonder if this is @maccairl's problem. It seems his steering components may have been bodged at some point.. this may explain his super light steering.

I don't really care about the variable speed assistance. Ideally I want to remove the connection between the PAS system and the VSS but not have it default to maximum assistance.

Read the post IL put in that thread. 5G's do not have the variable assistance.
