VSS - Does it really need a PAS connection?

VSS - Does it really need a PAS connection?

I am going to fit my new clutch to my 4th gen this weekend. Does the VSS really need to be connected to the power steering? I am tired of PAS fluid pissing everywhere whenever I take off my gearbox.
I take it that the two are used for the variable assist power steering?

Yes, the speed of the car, measured by the VSS, varies the hydraulic assistance given. If I remember correctly, without that connection, It'll run at max assistance all the time - aka, megalight.

Looking at the net, it seems the vss restricts the pass through of PAS fluid when at higher speeds, so if you coupled the two pipes going to the vss together and added something to restrict flow, you'd get heavier all the time.

I wonder if this is @maccairl's problem.
