PAS cooler pipe

What have people done when the cooling loop part of the PAS pipe has corroded away and lost all the PAS fluid?

I did a long Journey last weekend, all seemed fine, started my car up yesterday, 1 minute after starting , could hear a slightly nasty noise - which is coming from the pump, reservoir practically empty. I can see where its all leaked in the front bumper tray.

The pipe is a solid piece, running from the front all the way around the aux belts and back behind the block. I'm guessing a new pipe is going to be fairly pricey (even if available). I don't normally fit second hand parts, especially ones like this where they will all be in similar condition.

Anyone made their own pipe before? its 10.4mm o/d from my measurements, and is hose clipped into place so no special fittings, its bolted to the inner wing/chassis with simple rubberised P clips (its a low pressure return, so no crimped connectors thankfully). Was thinking i can probably take it off the car, and then bend one out of copper or similar to the same shape, and swap em over - bad idea or...?

Also, if the pump has started making a horrible noise - am i likely to need a new pump as well? Id hope it wasn't damaged during my quick trip to the end of the road (and then abort on hearing the noise). However, cant be sure it didnt lose oil on my long journey last weekend. Reluctant to put any new fluid in to find out otherwise its just going to drip everywhere and make a mess.

Anyone got an PAS pumps or know if their is an equivalent from other models (to aid the searching?) Looks very similar to the ones on the 2 litre lump (ala rover 620 - more than enough of those to go around at the breakers!)

Up until now, I've had over 3.5 years of enjoyable motoring from the lude, needing only tyres/brakes/exhaust.

Its a '97 2.2VTi Manual.

Sam (honda hardy) used something off a focus to replace one on his (ex)Mrs new 5g recently. Have a look through his recent posts and you should find it.

Yeah i saw that.

His 5th gen had the '2 part' setup, solid pipes, then 2 flexible joiners, then a solid radiator.

Ideally id like to replace the pipe all in one, otherwise if i cut the pipe, im worried it wont have the OE 'bulbous' bits to prevent pipes slipping off.

Anyone know what those bits are called on pipes, to assist in sealing to rubber pipes? Its not flare, but would be cool if i had a tool to add them into my replacement pipe. eg whats pictured on the ends of these:

Forget about the cooler and loop it near the resiviour, you'll need to cut the pipe, I flared mine for a better seal,

I used a little 5 row oil cooler on my accord type r with some decent reinforced hose from pirtek to plumb it in. It is on the low pressure side anyway so not a problem.

All sorted today...

I've done as doggo pictured, although my PAS return pipe runs along the chassis beam quite close to the pas belt.

I've cut it off just before it took a downwards turn , and looped it straight back into the bottom of the PAS pot. not sure i like the idea of my fluid being hotter than usual, but ill stick some copper pipe in the mix when i get there next. Because i had cut it quite close to the now remove holding bracket, it had a little play, so for safety its tie wrapped to the PAS pot also just to stop it straying (not that it would, but can never be too safe).

Prelude lives for another day, hoorah! :D

PS, pump wasn't knackered, pretty much used up a whole litre of PAS fluid though (spilt shed loads removing gubbins, not much room to move the pot). total cost of repairs, 7 quid for fluid, 5quid for some 9.5mm pipe from halfords, and a couple of hours...

My names davey lol, I see no need for the cooler, our climate is rather cool, same reason I have taken the coolant pipes off the throttle body an looped them, I don't think our climate is cold enough to cause any problems. Plan on changing power steering fluid every couple of years.

Also it's recommended to use genuine honda fluid only, if you have filled up with anything else it's ok for now but I'd change it when you could.
