Picked up my 5th gen last week and was fully aware it would need a bit of work before I can get her on the road properly. Drove it home which was about 20 miles and it became quite apparent my brakes are binding. The car has been sat for a little while with the previous owner so not massively surprised. I'm looking at taking them apart this weekend, giving everything a good clean and putting them back together and just hoping I don't come across something nasty along the way.

Being new to the 'lude, just wondering how easy people have found this if they have done it and any lil hints would be much appreciated! And please.....save your breath if you are going to tell me that using wd40 is bad lol

Using WD40 is bad! :nono:

Use silicone grease on the slider pins. These are nearly always the culprit. :geek:
Use copper grease on the back of the brake pads.

Front or rear?

Rear is very common indeed. Easy to work on. As you say, just a strip down and good clean and re-grease of the pad carriers is all that's required (make sure you take the shims out and clean off all the corrosion from the carriers). Also check the slider pins are free/not seized and the boots on them are in good condition.

Problems with the front is unusual.

If your fronts are bad, you might as well upgrade them. The 2.0 has 260mm discs whereas the 2.2 has 282mm discs. You would need discs from a 2.2 4th gen (4 stud) and calipers/pad carriers can be from either a 4th gen or 5th gen.

Ps yep WD40 isn't much cop... Plus gas or Duck oil are much better! :lol: ;-)

I had a similar problem on my 4th recently. I thought as usual that it would be the slider pins seizing, but actually they moved around fine. The real problem was the pads had swollen slightly and were stuck solid in the carrier - I had to bang them out and then file the edges so they fit a little better.. and problem solved.

So, undo the two bolts on the slider pins and remove the caliper. Push and pull the pins, if they move in and out then great, your problem will be swollen pads or a sticking piston. Fingers crossed its the pads.

Cheery guys.

Strangely the problem is front and rear on the offside only but I think for now I will take them all off and clean them up then maybe when cash flow is better I will look at upgrading. That link should prove quite useful in the future too, thanks!

I've done this before and I know generally speaking it is pretty much the same but you never know what uglies may pop up on a car I have never owned nor worked on before!!

Can't remember exactly, abs pump over run or something along those lines. I think someone just done a half arsed job and couldn't be bothered completing it as a couple of bits look new
