i suppose a faulty lambda sensor should show up with an error code, as that could cause a big overfuel

Things i would check.
1, positive and neg battery terminals are tight.
2, neg wire from battery to gearbox/body mount are tight.
3, alternator charge, make sure the voltage is less than 14.8 volts at the battery
4, second hand distributor, borrow a known working one,
5, ignition switch.

Re-reading all this...

When the garage say they can't find anything wrong after we suggested distributor for the non starting, what have they said they have changed/tested and how?
For instance, if they're only trying with 'a diagnostic tool', then on a 5th gen tbh they won't get much info on a non starting problem or with an over-fuelling problem. The diagnostics are pretty limited in comparison to a new car - basically provided the engine sensors aren't open circuit, it'll think everything is ok

It's old skool type diagnosis that is required on preludes, not modern plug and play.

So, for the starting problem, what have they done to test the distributor? Have they confirmed spark is ok?
For the starting problem and the cat burning problem, have they checked and confirmed fuel pressure is ok? (using a pressure gauge).
For the cat burning problem, have they directly tested the lambda sensor and confirmed that is ok?

That is why I suggested ignition timing. If it is too retarded all that unburnt fuel will be igniting in the exhaust. Vanzep once had that problem.

I think I'll just get him to take it to Honda. All this is way beyond me! And the mechanic by the sound of it

The latest is that he thinks it might be the ecu. Honda have quoted over £600 so he's going to send it off somewhere to be repaired. Anyone got any idea on what this might cost please?

you could pick up a 2nd hand OBD2 ECU for £20-60 here probably instead of a refurb
