Ironically, I've managed to make just 2 cars cover nearly 3/4 of my motoring life: 3g, 14 years so far, previously my SRI 130 Mk2 for 14 years, also. Did 240.000 in the SRI, only one replacement clutch, plus a hand-ful of discs / pads and other consumables. And the 3g is now up to 160.000, but only had 90.000 when bought in June 2000. So 2 cars in 28 years, total outlay: 7 grand for the SRI and 2 1/2 grand for the 3g. Total 9 1/2 grand in 28 years.

Car 69. Civic ESi. Drove it around for less than a week and nicked the engine out of it.

Nearly a year and a half on, it's time for an update.
70 (ish): a replacement for the first ATR, which was haemorrhaging money.

This one's a year older and has 3000 miles more on the clock, but it seems sound and well looked after.

We did 80-90,000 miles in 5 years and spent over £7000 keeping it going. Less than half of this could be attributed to standard servicing, replacements etc.wurlycorner wrote:What was going on with the old one?
It needed another £1500-2000.
Major: the gearbox lost reverse and the bulkhead/front wheel wells were rusting. Both of these are common.
Others: engine mounts, rattles from rear suspension, normal wear parts.
In contrast, the 5G Lude I originally bought for spares has done similar annual mileage for 2 1/2 years and has had little more than replacement tyres and brake pads. Even if I had to throw it away tomorrow, I'd feel that I'd had more than my money's worth.
