hi I have a gen 5 I'm losing coolant from the expansion bottle quite quick what can anybody tell me what's causing this I've been reading head gasket but want to go that far until I've checked everything else it's not over heating I'm a bit puzzled

Leak.... leave a large piece of clean card under the engine area overnight whilst its parked up to see if any drips onto it..
or have a good check of all the hoses and joints, check for a blue antifreeze deposit around end of pipes or gaskets, rad cap etc..
good place to start..
how quickly is it going down??

So the level is dropping or you are actually loosing coolant through the top f the bottle?? Very unlikely to be headgasket. My advise, if its filling up the expansion bottle then get a new rad cap

And just to add to that, i replaced a rad cap on a vti civic just last thursday for exactly that problem. The pressure release spring inside the cap went weak allowing coolant to flow into the bottle and the system not to get up to pressure.

I have exactly the same problem on my 4th gen mate, no signs of leakeage, and no other symptoms. I'm considering head gasket too.

Yea ok. Trust me, try a new rad cap first. Genuine cost around £30-40

he's topping up rather than coolant is being vented into the expansion tank and over-filling?

So the cap is working as it should, surely? - i.e. the level in the rad is dropping so it's drawing water from the tank to replace it? So the engine is using water, hence it's a leak somewhere or it's being burnt..?

Elton, welcome over from PUK. Have you checked the filler cap for signs of mayonnaise?

i thought he is loosing it as in its blowing coolant out of it, rather than the level dropping

i just think its unusual for a h series HG to go, thats all

Yep, am in agreement on H22's HG's lasting out - good strong engine in the regard and no doubt! ( :toucheswood:

But if there are no other obvious signs of leakage, it's defo something to check.

(p.s. I'm sure you know one end of a Prelude driveshaft from a rear hub

so we all have our moments!
