Well, all I can say is the way we have always done it is short it before. Then start it. Puts the ecu into a mode where it wont advance/retard ignition timing. So the ecu will only use the dizzy timing. I wouldn't feel comfortable shorting it with the motor running!!

You sure it was a good connection?? It should hold the EML light on whilst running!!

I once made the mistake of not taking the cover off the connector before trying to bridge it

It is easy enough to get a bad connection on the service connector, worth re-trying it bludge and use proper copper wire instead of a paperclip if poss.
