Trouble setting ignition timing

Dunno if it makes a difference, but the manual states to start the car, then bridge the connector, then set the timing.

You've got me wondering now........there are quite a few errors in the manual, this could be one. I think I'll double check the timing the other way just to be sure.

Well, all I can say is the way we have always done it is short it before. Then start it. Puts the ecu into a mode where it wont advance/retard ignition timing. So the ecu will only use the dizzy timing. I wouldn't feel comfortable shorting it with the motor running!!

i bridged the connector and started the engine but i had no dash lights stay on?

You sure it was a good connection?? It should hold the EML light on whilst running!!

I once made the mistake of not taking the cover off the connector before trying to bridge it

and your right bridge the connection before starting the engine

Well i dont remember ever having an issue when playing with the 4ws, but i have sinces removed all the 4ws stuff. would that affect it at all? i will give it another go at the weekend.

It is easy enough to get a bad connection on the service connector, worth re-trying it bludge and use proper copper wire instead of a paperclip if poss.

well i couldnt get the connector bridged even with copper wire but i have set the timing properly now i think. whether the ecu is gonna undo what i have just done im not sure. but was still ok when i rechecked after tightening the dizzy.
