If I were you I'd keep the cig socket (or at least relocate it) as it is good for powering things like tyre pumps etc... Not had it apart myself so can't help I'm afraid, other than to calm your frayed ends on this with encouragement that there are people that have a far greater struggle with this particular item than you are...

got to looking at this again today and bennyboy is right - the bottom of the metal housing unscrews allowing the inner lighter assembly to slide forward - you can then grab the plastic connection at the base and pull the cigarette lighter out.
sounds easy but i took it apart when it was off the car - would be tricky to do in situ but heres a few pics to help explain
