The climate control on the A6 has been blowing at the outside air temp since we got it. I assumed that because it was an old car it probably just needed a re-gas, and made a note to get somebody to out. Then when I changed the oil I spotted this little fiend hanging down by the A/C compressor

It's the trigger wire for the magnetic clutch in the pulley, and has been severed at some point.

Anyway, I repaired the wire today, started the car up and...

Boom! Ice cold air 8-)

I love it when a fix is that simple  I imagine the fuel economy is going to go down considerably though, up until now we've been getting about 550 miles to a tank!

Next on the list is a facelift rear bumper and exhaust, as the pre-facelift rear bumper has no exhaust pipe aperture and the tail pipe is hidden and downturned. The facelift has an aperture for the pipes and a straight twin pipe back box which I think looks a bit sportier.

There's only been 1 main down point with this car so far... It kind of makes me want to sell all my project cars and buy myself an A4 or A6 2.8 Quattro

MOTed the lude :)

Advisories for the discs and had to argue with the tester about a windscreen crack, but not bad for a 17 year old banger.

With regards to windscreen, it has a semi-circular crack which is several inches long but finishes and ends on the same edge so it doesn't go anywhere. Been there 4 years and passed all previous MOTs on account of being outside the swept area. The tester today said that he could see it was inside the swept area because of a line in the dust at the edge of the arc (presumably from where the wipers travel further when at speed due to the force of the wind?). However it was clearly outside the area covered by the wipers when used in the test center.

Went round and round in a circular argument for ages until I pointed out that if I cleaned the windscreen then took the car to VOSA/another garage it would pass. Felt like a bit of an arsehat to be honest, and I do appreciate that I should get the screen replaced anyway but just can't afford it at the moment.

Have you checked your insurance cover as a lot of people can replace damaged windscreens under their policy and they just have to pay an excess of £70 or £80.

Yeah I might try that. Just the crack predates my insurance and is on previous MOTs as an advisory so I feel bit iffy about that. Also I have a little bit of rust creeping into the A pillar right next to where the crack is, which I suspect might be the root cause and could open a whole can of worms for getting fixed properly. As the current crack doesn't seem in a hurry to deteriorate I'm tempted just to leave things as they are.

You'll be fine, you don't have to tell them it was there on previous MOTs etc. It happened yesterday, honest ;) they wont check because data protection. MOT has nowt to do with giving you insurance.
