Re: Nathan's Garage
I forgot you might read this Merc

Well the top soil was removed today...

Made quite the pile
...

The digging commenced as well, but as with what is fast becoming tradition (as it all happened within the first metre of extension dig) they happened upon a bit of an obstacle
...

His name's Ewan...

Also that armoured cable is slightly in the way as well
I've already got in contact with Southern Electric and waiting for a call back. They've flagged it up as urgent, so hopefully I won't have to wait the potential 5 days
They'll have to check whether it's live or dead first. Finger's crossed it's dead and then we can just rip it out the ground, as I can for the life of me think where it's actually going
If it's still live then fortunately it's only just into the foundations along the whole back, so bringing the foundations slightly forward should mean we can leave it alone and I don't have to pay the expense of having Southern Electric relocate it. The sand line was going to be the extremity of the foundations...

Also, another slight downer... This morning one of my builders informed me that the Surveyor had said due to the shear size of the building I wasn't going to be able make the garage single skin, or if I did, then I was going to have to get a structural engineer involved to design in steel peers.
So sadly it's going to cost twice as much for the blocks, but probably more noticeable is it's going to take twice as long to build
Nevermind though... At least it'll make it better

Your builders did of course CAT scan for cables, identify that one and mark it on the ground before they started driving their bucket into the ground, didn't they...

Maybe still be able to get away with single skin, but with double blockwork piers every so often, at the points where the joists will sit, perhaps???

Re: Nathan's Garage
That is of course the first thing the lady from Southern Electric asked
And I shall tell you the same thing I told her... Sorry I couldn't possibly say
But yes, a tad riske, but you honestly would have bet a lot of money there was no cable there. There's absolutely no reason for it to have ever been there.
I'd already drawn it up with blockwork piers, but apparently it's still not enough. I'll be doing some more enquiring before I actually start building up anyway, so we shall see.

You say about the single skin bit, When I see your plans ect and the size, I did wonder if it was going to have to be double skinned in the end. But hey . . .. its still going to be EPIC

Re: Nathan's Garage
I've seen plenty bigger with single skin. A lot of the units near my work are and they're twice as tall, but then I guess standards have changed.
